Chapter 1 - Daniel knew something was wrong before he even took off his coat. The flowers were still in his arms, a ridiculous explosion of white roses and pale pink lilies he had spent twenty minutes choosing because Claire loved birthdays more than she admitted.

He had imagined her laughing when she saw them.

Instead, he found her on her knees.

Pink frosting covered her cream blouse. It streaked through her dark hair and dripped onto the glass coffee table. One cheek was red from crying, and her hands shook as she tried to scrape cake from the floor.

For one frozen second, Daniel simply stared.

Then the flowers slipped from his fingers.

“Claire?”

She looked up.

Her eyes widened, and something inside him twisted.

He had seen Claire angry before. He had seen her exhausted, frustrated, even furious.

But he had never seen her look defeated.

Daniel crossed the room in three strides and dropped beside her.

“What happened?”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re covered in cake.”

“I said I’m fine.”

Her voice cracked on the last word.

Across the room, Evelyn sat on the sofa.

Perfect posture. Perfect hair. Perfect expression.

She looked less like a woman who had just witnessed a disaster and more like someone waiting for a delayed appointment.

“She’s being dramatic,” Evelyn said.

Daniel slowly turned.

His mother folded her hands in her lap.

“Claire became upset.”

“Why?”

“She overreacted.”

Daniel looked at Claire again.

Then he saw the bruise on her shoulder.

It was faint, already turning purple beneath the sleeve of her blouse.

His expression changed.

“Claire.”

She instinctively covered it.

That made his stomach drop.

“Who did that?”

“No one.”

“Claire.”

“I bumped into the table.”

Evelyn sighed.

“Exactly. This is what I’ve been dealing with.”

Daniel stood.

“What happened?”

Evelyn lifted one shoulder.

“I came here to speak with her privately.”

“About what?”

“About your marriage.”

Silence.

Claire closed her eyes.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“You came here to talk about my marriage?”

“You've been unhappy.”

His jaw tightened.

“According to who?”

“According to you.”

Daniel stared at her.

“I never said that.”

Evelyn's expression barely changed.

“You told me this morning that you needed distance from Claire.”

Claire's face went pale.

Daniel looked at her.

“Did she tell you that?”

Claire nodded.

“She said you were tired of managing me.”

Daniel's eyes widened.

“I never said that.”

“She said you blamed me for our problems.”

“I didn't.”

Evelyn stood.

“This is exactly why I came. Claire turns everything into a confrontation.”

Claire slowly got to her feet.

“No.”

Evelyn's eyes hardened.

Claire wiped frosting from her cheek.

“You threw the cake.”

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Mom?”

“She provoked me.”

“You threw a birthday cake at my wife?”

“She wouldn't listen.”

“She wouldn't listen to what?”

Evelyn's silence lasted two seconds.

That was enough.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You came here while I was at work. You told my wife I wanted to leave her. Then you threw a cake at her.”

“You're misunderstanding.”

“No.”

His voice was quiet now.

Dangerously quiet.

“No, Mom. For the first time, I think I'm understanding perfectly.”

Evelyn looked almost offended.

“After everything I've done for you?”

Daniel laughed once, without humor.

“What does that have to do with this?”

“I protected you.”

“From what?”

“From her.”

Claire froze.

Evelyn pointed at her.

“You don't know what she's really like.”

Daniel looked back at Claire.

He saw the trembling hands.

The ruined birthday cake.

The bruise.

The woman who had spent four years defending his mother even when he knew there was tension between them.

And suddenly something didn't add up.

He crouched beside Claire again.

“There's something you need to know.”

Claire stared at him.

“What?”

Daniel swallowed.

“This morning, Mom called me.”

Evelyn's eyes flickered.

“She said you had already spoken to her,” Claire whispered.

“I didn't.”

“Then why did she say you did?”

Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“I didn't call her this morning.”

Claire's heart began pounding.

“Then who did?”

Daniel looked at his mother.

“I was going to ask you that.”

Evelyn's face changed.

Just slightly.

But Claire saw it.

A flash of fear.

Daniel saw it too.

He unlocked his phone.

“I got a voicemail this morning.”

Evelyn took one step backward.

Daniel pressed play.

The recording began with Evelyn's voice.

But Claire's voice came next.

And Claire immediately recognized the words.

They were words she had never said.

Daniel stopped the recording.

He looked at his mother.

“What did you do?”

Evelyn's lips parted.

No answer came.

Then her phone rang.

She looked down at the screen.

For the first time that evening, genuine panic filled her face.

The caller's name was one Claire had never heard before.

Evelyn rejected the call.

A second later, a message appeared.

You promised he would never find out.

Daniel saw it.

So did Claire.

And neither of them understood what “it” was yet.

But they were about to.
