Chapter 15 - They reached Saint Agnes before noon. The hospital looked ordinary.

Too ordinary.

People walked through the lobby carrying coffee.

Children sat beside their parents.

Nurses hurried between rooms.

Nobody knew there was a hidden story beneath their feet.

Claire held Emma's bracelet.

Daniel walked beside her.

Marcus stayed behind.

Evelyn followed quietly.

They entered the old service elevator.

Evelyn pressed a button that did not appear on the panel.

The doors closed.

The elevator descended.

One floor.

Two.

Three.

Then deeper.

Claire felt pressure in her ears.

Emma held her hand.

“You've been here before.”

“I remember.”

The doors opened.

A long underground corridor stretched ahead.

Red door.

Blue walls.

Claire stopped breathing.

“It's the hospital.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You remember.”

“Yes.”

She walked slowly forward.

Every step brought another fragment.

A nurse.

A newborn.

A man shouting.

A syringe.

A baby crying.

Then Claire remembered the truth.

She had not come to the hospital alone.

Daniel's father had brought her there.

He had shown her Emma.

He had told her about Marcus.

He had told her Adrian wanted the child.

And then someone had attacked.

Claire remembered falling.

A needle.

Helena.

The attorney.

And a man standing in the doorway.

Daniel's father.

He had watched.

He hadn't stopped them.

Claire staggered.

Daniel caught her.

“I remember.”

“What?”

“My father was there.”

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“You said he was dead.”

“He wasn't.”

“And you knew.”

“Yes.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because he made me swear.”

“Why?”

“Because he said if I spoke, Adrian would know where you were.”

Marcus walked toward the bunker.

A metal door stood at the end.

The bracelet fit into a lock.

The door opened.

Inside was a small room.

Files.

Hard drives.

A crib.

And one man standing beside it.

Daniel's father.

Alive.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Holding a photograph of Emma.

Daniel stopped.

“You.”

The man smiled.

“Hello, son.”

Claire stepped forward.

“You left me with nothing.”

He looked at her.

“I saved you.”

“No.”

“You survived.”

“You made me forget my daughter.”

“I made sure Adrian couldn't use your memories against you.”

“You watched them drug me.”

“I had no choice.”

Claire stared at him.

“Everyone says that.”

He looked at Daniel.

“I know who your biological father is.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Marcus.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you raise me as your son?”

“To hide you.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian believed you were dead.”

Daniel froze.

“I was supposed to be killed the same night your father was.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Then why did you let me believe my son was dead?”

Daniel's father looked at him.

“Because your son was safer as my son.”

Marcus's face hardened.

“You stole twenty years from me.”

“I gave him twenty years.”

Claire looked around.

“Where is Emma's trust?”

Daniel's father pointed to the crib.

“Underneath.”

Claire knelt.

There was a hidden compartment.

Inside lay the original trust papers.

The DNA records.

And a final letter.

Claire opened it.

It was from Daniel's biological father.

Marcus.

The letter was dated twenty years earlier.

My son, if you are reading this, I failed to protect you.

Daniel read over Claire's shoulder.

The letter explained everything.

Marcus had been the rightful heir.

Adrian had tried to kill him.

Daniel's adoptive father had protected him.

Evelyn had hidden him.

Claire had been brought into the plan because she had discovered Adrian's crimes.

The accident had been staged.

The memory manipulation had been real.

But one part had been wrong.

Claire had not been the victim of every lie.

She had helped create one.

The letter continued:

Claire knew the truth before the accident. She agreed to forget so Emma could live.

Claire stared.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You agreed?”

“I don't remember.”

The final page answered.

She chose this.

Claire began crying.

“I chose to forget my own daughter?”

“You chose to survive,” the older man said.

“But why?”

He pointed to Emma.

“Because Adrian had found her.”

Emma looked up.

“Mommy?”

Claire dropped to her knees.

She held her daughter tightly.

Then the underground lights flickered.

Daniel's father looked toward the corridor.

Adrian's voice echoed through the bunker.

“You finally found it.”

Daniel stood.

Adrian walked into the room.

Behind him were armed men.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Let them go.”

Adrian smiled.

“No.”

He looked at Claire.

Then at Emma.

“You still don't understand the final part.”

“What?”

Adrian's smile vanished.

“Emma isn't the heir.”

Everyone froze.

He pointed at Daniel.

“She is the witness.”

Marcus frowned.

“To what?”

Adrian's eyes shifted to the old man.

“The truth about your father's death.”

Daniel looked at his adoptive father.

Adrian said quietly:

“He didn't die because of me.”

Silence.

“He died because of the person standing beside you.”

Daniel turned.

Slowly.

Toward Evelyn.

Evelyn's face crumpled.

Claire whispered:

“No.”

Adrian smiled.

“Ask your mother what happened the night she pulled the trigger.”

And Daniel looked at Evelyn like he had never seen her before.

The gunshot that killed his father had been fired by his mother.

But the person she was trying to kill…

May you like

wasn't his father.

It was Marcus.
