Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO PRETENDED TO HATE METhe vault remained silent.

David stared at the screen.

“No.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Dad…”

Her voice trembled.

Richard looked at his daughter.

“What did you do?”

Elena ignored him.

She looked at me.

“I wasn't sent here to destroy you.”

“Then why?”

“To save you.”

David laughed.

“Don't believe her.”

Elena turned toward him.

“You told me Madeline killed my father.”

Richard stared at David.

“What?”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“He convinced me you were responsible.”

Richard looked at David.

“You used my daughter.”

“Yes.”

David's smile returned.

“She was useful.”

Elena raised her weapon.

“You poisoned her.”

David shrugged.

“You said you wanted revenge.”

“I wanted the truth.”

She pointed the gun directly at him.

“Now I have it.”

Adrian moved behind David.

“This changes nothing.”

Elena looked at him.

“It changes everything.”

She activated a hidden device.

The walls lit up.

Hundreds of screens appeared.

Documents.

Emails.

Bank transfers.

Audio recordings.

Every crime.

Every conversation.

Every order.

Every bribe.

All transmitted to servers around the world.

Samuel stared.

“You uploaded the ledger.”

Elena smiled.

“Not the ledger.”

“The entire Blackwell archive.”

Adrian's face went pale.

“You stupid girl.”

“Maybe.”

She looked at him.

“But I'm not dead.”

Alarms began screaming.

Police sirens echoed outside.

News helicopters approached the estate.

The information was already spreading.

Adrian turned toward the exit.

Too late.

The steel doors opened.

Police stormed the vault.

David dropped his gun.

Margaret was arrested first.

Then Adrian.

Then Samuel.

Richard surrendered without resistance.

I watched David being handcuffed.

He looked at me.

“You think you won?”

I didn't answer.

He smiled.

“You don't know what your mother did.”

My mother went pale.

David continued.

“She wasn't protecting you.”

“She was protecting herself.”

My mother whispered:

“Don't.”

David laughed.

“Tell her.”

I looked at her.

“What is he talking about?”

She shook her head.

“Nothing.”

David leaned toward me.

“Ask her who your real father is.”

The room fell silent.

My mother closed her eyes.

I felt sick.

“Mom?”

She whispered:

“I didn't want you to know.”

David smiled.

“The man you called father wasn't your biological father.”

I stared at my mother.

She was crying.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

She looked toward Adrian.

Then Richard.

Then Samuel.

Finally, she looked at me.

“Your father was…”

She never finished.

A police officer shouted.

“Everyone down!”

A gunshot cracked.

My mother fell.

I screamed.

But this time the gunman wasn't Adrian.

It was David.

He had grabbed a hidden weapon from one of the guards.

Police tackled him.

I ran toward my mother.

Blood covered her coat.

She grabbed my wrist.

“Listen.”

I cried.

“Don't talk.”

She shook her head.

“You have to know.”

Her eyes met mine.

“Your father was Edward.”

I froze.

David laughed from the floor.

He knew.

He had lied.

My mother whispered:

“But Edward wasn't the only one.”

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

She squeezed my hand.

“Blackwell began before Edward.”

“Your grandfather created it.”

“And the man who finished it…”

Her voice disappeared.

I leaned closer.

“Who?”

She looked at Adrian.

Then whispered one last word.

“David.”

My blood ran cold.

That made no sense.

David wasn't old enough.

He couldn't have created Blackwell.

Unless…

The man I had married had been lying about his identity too.

The police dragged him away.

As he passed me, he smiled.

“Now you're finally asking the right question.”

May you like

Then he whispered:

“Madeline Hayes is not your real name.”
