Chapter 8 - THE LAWYER WHO KNEW TOO MUCHI stared at Samuel.

He didn't look surprised.
He looked tired.
“Madeline…”
“No.”
My voice shook.
“You.”
He lowered the gun slightly.
“I never wanted you to see this.”
David laughed.
“I told you!”
Samuel didn't look at him.
“Edward was my closest friend.”
“You killed him?”
“No.”
I held up the document.
“Then explain this.”
Samuel stepped forward.
“The order came from a board.”
“Which board?”
“The Blackwell board.”
“Who signed it?”
He looked at me.
“I did.”
Silence.
“Why?”
“Because they threatened you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says they were protecting me.”
Samuel closed his eyes.
“I signed an authorization.”
“For my father's murder?”
“For the extraction.”
“What?”
“He was being held.”
Samuel's voice broke.
“Blackwell captured your father because he had the ledger.”
“So what happened?”
“I tried to get him out.”
“And?”
“I failed.”
The room became silent.
“Who killed him?”
Samuel looked at the document.
“Richard.”
Everyone turned.
Richard's face collapsed.
“No.”
Samuel nodded.
“Richard was the one inside the vehicle.”
I stared at Richard.
He began to cry.
“I didn't know.”
“You did.”
“I thought it was a rescue.”
“You drove him to them.”
Richard covered his face.
I looked at all three men.
My father had trusted them.
And every one of them had betrayed him.
Then Samuel said the sentence that changed the story.
“Your father wasn't trying to hide the ledger from Blackwell.”
“Then what was he doing?”
“He was hiding it from you.”
“Why?”
“Because there was something in it about your mother.”
I froze.
“My mother died when I was six.”
“She didn't.”
I couldn't breathe.
“What?”
Samuel looked toward the old photograph.
“Your mother disappeared.”
My hands shook.
“Why?”
“Because she discovered what Blackwell was.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“She tried to expose us.”
I stared at him.
“You knew my mother?”
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
No one answered.
Then a woman's voice came from the tunnel entrance.
“Here.”
Every head turned.
A woman stepped out of the shadows.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Wearing a dark coat.
I stared.
I didn't recognize her.
Then she lifted her face.
And I recognized her eyes.
My knees almost gave way.
“Mom?”
She started crying.
“Madeline.”
I couldn't move.
My mother ran toward me.
I collapsed into her arms.
For several seconds, I forgot David.
Forgot Blackwell.
Forgot every betrayal.
There was only one thought.
My mother was alive.
Then she whispered:
“You have to leave.”
I pulled back.
“Why?”
“Because the vault was never the real target.”
“What is?”
She looked at the black box in my hands.
“You.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“The system your father built doesn't store information.”
“Then what does it do?”
“It controls money.”
“How much?”
She looked at Samuel.
“Enough to decide who controls half the world's private infrastructure.”
I stared.
The vault wasn't just a storage room.
It was a command center.
A hidden financial system.
Patents.
Licensing.
Contracts.
Data.
Ownership.
The architecture empire my father built wasn't only an empire.
It was a lever.
Whoever controlled it could manipulate entire economies.
My mother took the black key from my hand.
“Your father designed one final safeguard.”
“What safeguard?”
She looked at me.
“You.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
She nodded.
“Your DNA activates the system.”
“And then?”
“You can shut everything down.”
Adrian's face changed.
“What did you tell her?”
My mother smiled.
“The truth.”
Adrian raised his weapon.
Samuel moved.
David lunged.
Everything happened at once.
A gunshot.
A scream.
The lights exploded.
And the entire vault door slammed shut.
We were trapped inside.
Then the computer system came alive.
A voice spoke through the speakers.
My father's voice.
Recorded decades earlier.
Madeline, if you're hearing this, they've finally forced you into the vault.
That means everyone you trusted failed.
Including Samuel.
But there is one person you must trust.
I looked at my mother.
The recording continued.
Trust the woman who betrayed you.
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Then another name appeared.
JESSICA VALE.
