Chapter 7 - THE VAULT UNDER MY BEDWe reached the old estate before midnight.

I refused to let anyone stop me.
Samuel argued.
Elena argued.
Richard insisted he was coming despite the bullet wound.
I ignored all of them.
Because David had made one mistake.
He believed my love for someone could still control me.
He didn't understand that whatever softness had existed inside me had died the moment I watched him measure my life in days.
We entered through the library.
Everything was exactly as I remembered.
The fireplace.
The books.
The portrait of my father.
My childhood piano.
I walked slowly toward the carpet.
Samuel pointed.
“Here.”
A faint line ran across the floor.
He knelt.
“There's something underneath.”
We pulled back the carpet.
A steel door appeared.
No keypad.
No lock.
Only a small glass panel.
Samuel looked at me.
“Your blood.”
I pressed my palm against it.
The panel scanned.
A green light appeared.
The door opened.
Inside was not a room.
It was a tunnel.
We descended.
At the bottom was a circular chamber.
No gold.
No cash.
No diamonds.
Only rows of black metal cabinets.
Each cabinet had a name.
Corporations.
Countries.
Politicians.
Executives.
Judges.
I opened the first drawer.
Documents.
Photographs.
Recordings.
Payments.
Enough evidence to destroy governments.
Samuel whispered:
“This is it.”
“The ledger?”
“No.”
He looked around.
“This is bigger.”
At the center of the room stood a single black box.
My name was engraved on it.
MADELINE EDWARD HAYES.
I opened it.
Inside was a small key.
And a photograph of my parents.
My father had written something on the back.
The truth always survives the people who try to bury it.
Then the lights went out.
David's voice came through speakers.
“You found it.”
I turned.
He was standing above us on the staircase.
Gun in hand.
Margaret beside him.
She was alive.
Barely.
David smiled.
“I knew you'd come.”
I looked at him.
“You poisoned me.”
“Yes.”
“You set the fire.”
“Yes.”
“You used Jessica.”
“She wasn't supposed to survive either.”
Elena stepped forward.
David raised the gun.
“Don't.”
She stopped.
I stared at my husband.
“How long?”
“How long what?”
“How long have you been planning to kill me?”
David's smile disappeared.
“Since the first week we met.”
The words hit harder than the gunshot had.
He continued.
“You were supposed to be easy.”
“You were lonely.”
“You wanted love.”
“You wanted someone who would understand your father's legacy.”
He laughed.
“You were perfect.”
I swallowed.
“And Jessica?”
“Disposable.”
Elena looked sick.
David continued.
“She believed I loved her.”
He turned to Margaret.
“She believed she was going to be my wife.”
Margaret looked at him.
“David…”
He ignored her.
Then he looked at me.
“Do you know what I never understood?”
“What?”
“Why your father left everything to you.”
I smiled faintly.
“He didn't.”
David's expression changed.
“What?”
“My fortune.”
I nodded toward the cabinets.
“He left me control.”
Not money.
Control.
The difference was everything.
David stared.
Then I said:
“And you just admitted everything on camera.”
He froze.
Samuel lifted his phone.
Recording.
David's face turned white.
“You…”
“I knew you'd come.”
I smiled.
“For once, I wanted the truth to speak for itself.”
David raised the gun.
Before he could fire, a shot rang out.
Margaret collapsed.
Everyone froze.
But the bullet had not come from David.
It came from above.
Adrian stepped onto the balcony.
He looked at me.
“Enough.”
David stared.
“You.”
Adrian smiled.
“I told you I'd finish this.”
Then he pointed his gun at me.
“But first, the vault.”
I looked at him.
“You already know what's here.”
“Not everything.”
“What are you missing?”
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
“The final cabinet.”
I looked around.
Every cabinet was labeled.
Except one.
A black drawer hidden behind the wall.
I walked toward it.
Adrian smiled.
“Open it.”
I did.
Inside was a single file.
One page.
One name.
I read it.
And the entire world seemed to tilt.
The name belonged to the person who had ordered my father's murder.
Not David.
Not Adrian.
Not Margaret.
It was someone who had been protecting me from the beginning.
Samuel.
I slowly turned.
May you like
He was standing behind me.
Holding a gun.
