Chapter 7 - The Inheritance Nobody Knew ExistedThe theater seemed to tilt around me.

“I'm not a Mercer.”

Elias watched me carefully.

“You are.”

“No.”

“Your mother was Helena Mercer.”

Clara's eyes widened.

“My aunt.”

Elias nodded.

“Your grandfather was Julian Mercer.”

Gabriel stepped forward.

“Then why did she grow up as Evelyn Vale?”

“To keep her alive.”

“From Adrian?”

“From everyone.”

I looked at Clara.

“You knew?”

She shook her head.

“Not all of it.”

“You knew enough.”

“I knew your mother had a secret.”

“But not this.”

“No.”

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I asked the only question that mattered.

“Where is she?”

Elias gave me a location.

Then he said:

“You have one hour.”

“One hour for what?”

“To decide whether you want revenge or the truth.”

“I want both.”

He smiled.

“That answer will get people killed.”

He turned away.

Gabriel raised his gun.

“Stop.”

Elias looked back.

“You still don't understand.”

“Understand what?”

“The Mercer fortune was never stolen.”

I laughed.

“You've spent decades moving stolen money.”

“The money was stolen from someone else first.”

“Who?”

Elias answered:

“Your grandfather.”

That made no sense.

Julian Mercer had supposedly built the empire from nothing.

Elias explained the final layer.

Julian had discovered that major corporations were secretly manipulating national debt through a network of private banks.

He joined them.

Then he betrayed them.

He stole billions.

The Mercers built their empire using money stolen by their own patriarch.

Then Thomas inherited it.

Then Adrian.

The entire family fortune was a chain of theft stretching through generations.

But one account remained untouched.

A private trust created by Julian.

The beneficiary was not Thomas.

Not Adrian.

Not Celeste.

Me.

“Why me?”

“Because Julian believed you were the only descendant who could be trusted.”

“But I was a child.”

“Exactly.”

The trust could not be accessed until I turned twenty-nine.

I was twenty-eight.

Three months before my wedding, Adrian had discovered the account.

That explained everything.

The urgency.

The proposal.

The control.

The forged loans.

He hadn't wanted to marry me.

He wanted my inheritance.

And if I died before turning twenty-nine, the trust would transfer to the Mercer foundation.

Adrian would control it.

I suddenly remembered the contracts he had made me sign.

Prenuptial papers.

Life insurance.

Estate documents.

All designed to move everything into his control.

My skin crawled.

“Where is my mother?”

Elias handed me a key.

“She can explain the rest.”

I took it.

Then he whispered:

“Don't trust Gabriel.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

May you like

He smiled.

“Because Gabriel isn't trying to save you.”
