Chapter 13 - The BloodlineNobody spoke.

Adrian stared at Elise.

“You're lying.”

“No.”

“You're dead.”

“Apparently that rumor travels in this family.”

She stepped forward.

“My sister Helena took you after I disappeared.”

My mother lowered her head.

“I had no choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

Adrian looked at Celeste.

“My mother knew?”

Elise laughed softly.

“Celeste isn't your mother.”

Adrian looked devastated.

Elias smiled.

“She raised you.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas needed an heir.”

Elise explained.

Years ago, Julian Mercer had discovered a dangerous secret.

The Mercer family had engineered marriages between rival branches of the family to preserve control of the fortune.

Adrian was born outside that plan.

His biological father was a rival financier.

Someone Elias wanted to control.

So Elias arranged Adrian's disappearance as a child.

Thomas took him.

Celeste raised him.

And the real bloodline was hidden.

Adrian looked at me.

“Then why marry you?”

Elias answered.

“Because he was told you were the key.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

He had spent his life believing he was powerful.

Now he discovered he had been a puppet.

The timer hit ten minutes.

Elias shouted:

“Activate the trust!”

“No,” I said.

He raised his gun.

My father stepped into view.

“Don't.”

Elias pointed at him.

“Richard.”

My father looked tired.

“I told you I'd come for you.”

“You failed.”

“Not yet.”

He pulled a small device from his coat.

A detonator.

Elias froze.

“What is that?”

“The basement charges.”

I stared.

“You planted explosives?”

“Yes.”

“To destroy the evidence?”

“No.”

My father looked at Elias.

“To destroy the room if you try to access it.”

Elias laughed.

“You'd kill your own daughter.”

“I would destroy the machine.”

I looked at my father.

For the first time, I understood.

He wasn't asking me to trust him.

He was giving me a choice.

Then another message appeared on the screen.

MERCER TRUST TRANSFER READY.

The clock showed 07:30.

I approached the terminal.

“Evelyn,” Adrian whispered.

I looked at him.

“If you activate it, everything changes.”

“I know.”

“Even me.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“Then do it.”

I placed my hand on the scanner.

The system asked:

TRANSFER CONTROL TO ORIGINAL HEIR?

I pressed YES.

CONFIRM?

I pressed YES.

The screen turned black.

Then white.

A single sentence appeared.

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Elias stared.

“No.”

I smiled.

“It's over.”

He shook his head.

“You think ownership gives you power?”

“No.”

I turned toward the cameras.

“Evidence does.”

Every file began uploading.

Judicial servers.

Newsrooms.

International agencies.

Public archives.

Millions of devices.

Elias screamed.

The world saw everything.

The names.

The payments.

The murders.

The conspiracy.

And then I saw one final file.

A document labeled:

PROJECT EVELYN.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of me as a baby.

Beside it was a note.

She was never meant to survive.

Underneath was a signature.

My father's.

I turned slowly.

“Dad?”

He didn't speak.

My mother began crying.

I looked at him.

“You ordered them to kill me?”

He stepped closer.

“No.”

I pointed at the document.

“Then why is your signature here?”

He stared at the screen.

His face changed.

“That…”

He whispered.

“…is not my signature.”

The room went silent.

Elias smiled.

Then laughed.

Because he knew something we didn't.

“The person who forged that document…”

He looked toward the final door.

“…is still alive.”

The door opened.

A man stepped inside.

He was carrying a photograph of my childhood.

I knew him.

He had been dead for twenty years.

May you like

My grandfather.

Julian Mercer.
