Chapter 14 - The Last BetrayalEverything inside me shattered.

“Noah!”

I ran through the facility.

Doors.

Hallways.

Security rooms.

Nothing.

His blanket was on the floor.

His bottle beside it.

Gone.

Ethan arrived.

“Who took him?”

“I don’t know.”

My father checked the security feed.

The camera showed a doctor carrying Noah.

But the face had been digitally altered.

“We’ve been breached.”

I grabbed Ethan’s shirt.

“Find my son.”

“I will.”

“Find him!”

“I will.”

The signal came from the same rooftop.

We went.

A helicopter was waiting.

And beside it stood Elena.

Alive.

Again.

My heart stopped.

“How?”

She smiled.

“You really should stop believing people when they die.”

Noah was in her arms.

I froze.

“Give him to me.”

She shook her head.

“Not yet.”

The Architect appeared behind her.

Ethan’s father.

He looked at Ethan.

“You could have had everything.”

“You destroyed my family.”

“I built your family.”

“You killed Daniel.”

“No.”

He pointed at Elena.

“She did.”

Elena’s smile vanished.

“What?”

He continued.

“You were useful.”

“You were expendable.”

Elena stared at him.

“You promised me control.”

“I promised you survival.”

She raised her gun.

For one moment, they faced each other.

Then she shot him.

He fell.

Elena grabbed Noah.

“Come with me.”

I moved closer.

“You killed him.”

“He deserved it.”

“You killed my mother.”

“I saved you from her.”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“You destroyed me.”

She looked at Noah.

“Your son changes everything.”

Ethan moved behind her.

“Drop the weapon.”

She turned.

Too late.

Ethan disarmed her.

Noah fell into my arms.

I kissed him.

Again and again.

He clung to me.

“Mommy.”

“I’ve got you.”

Police sirens sounded below.

The entire network was collapsing.

The drive had been sent to dozens of journalists and investigators.

Everyone was about to know the truth.

But then my father walked up.

His face was pale.

“Mara.”

I turned.

He held a single document.

“Your mother left one final instruction.”

“What?”

He handed it to me.

I read it.

THE TRUST MUST NOT BE DESTROYED.

My father said:

“She wanted you to take control.”

“Control of what?”

He looked at Ethan.

“Everything.”

My heart stopped.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the only way to destroy the system is to own it first.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“There is one problem.”

“What?”

“The trust has a final condition.”

My stomach tightened.

“What condition?”

He looked at Noah.

“The heir must reach eighteen.”

“And until then?”

“You are the trustee.”

I stared at the document.

Then I saw the final signature.

My mother’s.

Below it was a second signature.

One I had never seen.

My own.

Dated twenty years before I was born.

That was impossible.

Unless my entire life had been planned before I was born.

May you like

And someone had been preparing me for this moment from the beginning.

End of Chapter 14.
