Chapter 13 - The Real InheritanceI woke to darkness.

My ears rang.
Noah was crying.
I pulled him against my chest.
“Mommy.”
“I’m here.”
I checked his arms.
His legs.
His face.
No blood.
A gunshot had struck the ground beside us.
Ethan had tackled the sniper.
My father was wounded.
The Architect had disappeared.
For the first time, I understood.
This was never about forty million dollars.
It was about control over something much larger.
We found shelter underground.
My father opened an old metal case.
Inside was a drive.
“This is the truth.”
He handed it to me.
“What is it?”
“Everything.”
Ethan connected it to a secure computer.
Files appeared.
Bank accounts.
Names.
Politicians.
Corporations.
Judges.
Law firms.
Security agencies.
Decades of transactions.
The network stretched across the world.
And at the center was one document.
THE ORIGINAL TRUST.
I opened it.
The first beneficiary:
My mother.
The second:
Me.
The third:
Noah.
I stared.
“Why Noah?”
My father looked away.
“Because the trust was designed to survive generations.”
“But why use DNA?”
“To prevent anyone else from inheriting it.”
“What does it control?”
He whispered:
“Ownership.”
“Of what?”
“Everything connected to it.”
Ethan looked at the screen.
“It’s not just money.”
“No.”
“It owns stakes in companies.”
“Yes.”
“Banks.”
“Yes.”
“Ports.”
“Yes.”
“Energy.”
My father nodded.
“Which means whoever controls the trust can influence entire industries.”
I stared at Noah.
A child who had no idea what any of this meant.
The Architect wanted him.
Not because of revenge.
Because of power.
Then I found one final document.
A recording.
My mother.
I pressed play.
Her face appeared.
She looked tired.
But alive.
“Mara, if you are seeing this, I failed to protect you.”
My throat tightened.
“The people around you will tell you that your inheritance is money.”
She shook her head.
“It isn’t.”
“It is evidence.”
“It is leverage.”
“And above all, it is a weapon against the people who built this system.”
I started crying.
“I knew your father would try to protect you.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“I knew Elena would betray us.”
“But I never knew whether I could trust Ethan.”
Ethan looked at the screen.
Then my mother said:
“If you are standing beside him, there is only one reason.”
She paused.
“He chose you over the empire.”
The recording ended.
I looked at Ethan.
He said nothing.
My phone buzzed.
A text.
COME TO THE ROOFTOP. BRING THE DRIVE.
I looked at the sender.
It was Noah’s pediatrician.
Impossible.
Another message followed.
YOUR SON IS WITH US.
I looked down.
Noah was gone.
May you like
I screamed.
End of Chapter 13.
