Chapter 6 - Sebastian VossWe carried Vanessa to the end of the tunnel.

She was conscious.
Barely.
The bullet had grazed her shoulder.
I pressed a cloth against the wound.
"Who shot you?"
She shook her head.
"Not now."
"Who?"
"Sebastian."
Andrew looked at me.
"It's started."
"What does that mean?"
"He knows we found the records."
Vanessa winced.
"He's been waiting."
"For what?"
"For you."
I stared at her.
"Why me?"
She closed her eyes.
"Because you're the heir."
"What heir?"
Andrew answered.
"Whitmore Holdings."
"I already run the company."
"Not all of it."
He reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a sealed document.
"My grandfather created a private trust."
"What does that have to do with Sebastian?"
"He wanted control."
"Control of what?"
"Everything."
Andrew handed me the document.
The trust named me sole beneficiary.
But there was a clause.
A terrifying clause.
If I died before reaching thirty-five, control of the trust would pass to a third party.
Sebastian Voss.
I looked at Andrew.
"He's been waiting for me to die?"
"Yes."
"Then why did he need Vanessa?"
Andrew glanced at her.
"Because she was supposed to marry you."
I looked at Vanessa.
She began to cry.
"I was supposed to get you to sign."
"Sign what?"
"A transfer."
"Of the trust?"
She nodded.
"I tried to stop it."
"You nearly killed Maria."
"I didn't."
"Then who did?"
She looked at Andrew.
"Sebastian."
Andrew's face hardened.
"You're lying."
"I'm not."
She grabbed my hand.
"Alex, listen to me."
I pulled away.
"You lied to me for years."
"I know."
"You pretended not to know Andrew."
"I know."
"You came into my house."
"I know."
"You were going to marry me."
"I was going to."
"Then why stop?"
Her voice broke.
"Because I fell in love with you."
Silence.
Even Andrew said nothing.
Vanessa lowered her head.
"But by then it was too late."
A loud explosion shook the building.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Andrew stood.
"We have to go."
"Where?"
He pointed toward the tunnel exit.
"The old chapel."
We emerged behind an abandoned chapel on the edge of the property.
Rain was falling.
Cars waited outside.
Security guards ran toward us.
Then one of them collapsed.
Then another.
Silenced shots.
Andrew pulled Noah down.
I grabbed Vanessa.
"Inside!"
We ran into the chapel.
Someone was firing from the trees.
The old doors slammed shut.
We barricaded them.
Then I saw something on the altar.
A black envelope.
My name was written across it.
I opened it.
Inside was one sentence.
Your brother didn't fake his death. Your father did.
I stared at the words.
Andrew came closer.
He read them.
Then his face changed.
"Alex..."
"What?"
"My father wasn't dead."
I looked at him.
"Grandfather?"
"No."
Our father.
The man everyone told us had died when I was twelve.
May you like
Andrew whispered:
"He's alive too."
