Chapter 13 - The Woman in SilverClara moved quickly.

Andrew grabbed Noah.
I raised my gun.
"Stop."
She stopped.
"You're making a mistake."
"Who are you?"
She smiled.
"You know my name."
"Clara."
She nodded.
"Your grandmother hated me."
"Why?"
"Because I knew what your family had done."
"Sebastian's family?"
She laughed.
"You still don't understand."
She looked at our father.
"Tell him."
He lowered his head.
Clara stepped forward.
"Sebastian didn't build the operation alone."
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Then who?"
She answered calmly.
"Your grandfather."
The room fell silent.
"That's impossible."
"Your grandfather started it."
Andrew stared at her.
"Our grandfather?"
"He created the offshore companies."
"No."
"He used the Whitmore fleet."
I looked at the ledgers.
"Then Sebastian took over."
"Exactly."
Clara smiled.
"Your family built the machine. Sebastian simply learned how to control it."
"Why did you raise Noah?"
"Because Maria asked me to."
"Why would she trust you?"
"Because I was the only person Sebastian feared."
Andrew looked at her.
"Why?"
Clara touched the bracelet.
"This belonged to my mother."
"Who?"
"Eleanor Whitmore."
My mother went pale.
I looked at her.
"Grandmother?"
Clara nodded.
"Your grandmother was also my mother."
I stared.
"You were her daughter."
"Yes."
"But she told us..."
"That I died?"
She smiled.
"That was the point."
I finally understood.
Clara was the missing child.
The family secret buried beneath generations.
And Noah was connected to all of it.
"Why does Sebastian want him?"
Clara's eyes moved toward the boy.
"Because Noah inherited something from his father."
"What?"
"A location."
I frowned.
"Locations aren't inherited."
"Memories are."
She reached into her coat.
Pulled out a small cassette recorder.
She pressed play.
Andrew's voice filled the room.
"If anything happens to me, Noah knows where the second ledger is."
Andrew froze.
"I never recorded that."
Clara looked at him.
"You did."
"No."
She smiled.
"You told Noah while he was asleep."
"That's impossible."
"He remembers things."
Noah looked at me.
"I remember Daddy talking about a house."
"What house?"
"At the ocean."
Andrew went pale.
"Santa Barbara."
Clara nodded.
"The boat wasn't destroyed."
I stared.
"What?"
"The boat was recovered."
"Then why..."
"Because the real evidence was never on the boat."
Andrew whispered:
"The island."
Clara nodded.
"The island where your father was held."
I suddenly heard a car approaching outside.
Several headlights swept across the windows.
Clara looked toward the entrance.
"Sebastian is here."
I raised the gun.
"Then we finish this."
She shook her head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because that's exactly what he wants."
The front doors exploded inward.
Men stormed the hall.
Gunfire erupted.
Noah screamed.
Andrew pulled him behind the stairs.
And through the smoke, Sebastian walked inside.
Holding my mother by the hair.
He looked at me.
"Bring me Noah."
Then my mother suddenly smiled.
Sebastian's expression changed.
Because she wasn't afraid anymore.

She whispered:
"You're too late."
