Chapter 11 - The police arrived within minutes. But I no longer trusted the police.

Elena agreed.
“We move Noah ourselves.”
Rebecca stared at the photograph.
“They know where we are.”
“Then where do we go?”
“My old safe house.”
“Where?”
She hesitated.
“Lake Michigan.”
We packed quickly.
Noah was found twenty-eight minutes later.
Not kidnapped.
Hidden.
He had crawled into a storage room after hearing the window break.
Claire found him.
He was crying.
He wouldn't let go of her.
“I thought they took you,” Claire whispered.
Noah shook his head.
“I hid.”
I crouched beside him.
“You were brave.”
He looked at me.
“Mom's friend told me to hide.”
“What friend?”
Noah pointed toward Rebecca.
“She came to my room.”
Rebecca went pale.
“I wasn't upstairs.”
Noah frowned.
“The other lady.”
The room went silent.
Evelyn.
The woman who looked like Rebecca.
She had been inside the house again.
Elena checked the cameras.
There was no footage.
Then Daniel found something.
A hidden camera.
Tiny.
Mounted inside the hallway smoke detector.
Someone had been watching the house.
For months.
Maybe years.
The camera had a remote transmission system.
Daniel traced it.
The signal led to an abandoned warehouse.
We went there.
Inside, we found dozens of monitors.
Every screen displayed our lives.
Claire's townhouse.
My office.
Daniel's firm.
The grocery store.
Even the cemetery.
They had been following us everywhere.
One monitor showed a folder labeled:
PHASE THREE.
I opened it.
The first document:
ROBERT HALE TERMINATION.
The second:
CLAIRE HALE DISPLACEMENT.
The third:
NOAH HALE CUSTODIAL TRANSFER.
The fourth:
REBECCA HALE CONTAINMENT.
Then the fifth.
SAMUEL HALE DISPOSAL.
I stared.
They intended to kill Samuel too.
He wasn't the mastermind.
He was disposable.
Suddenly, an old printer started running.
A document emerged.
One page.
Signed by Samuel.
It was a confession.
Claire took it.
“What does it say?”
She read silently.
Then looked at me.
“Dad…”
I took the page.
Samuel confessed to the theft.
But halfway down, the confession changed.
He said he had taken orders from someone.
Someone he called:
THE ARCHITECT.
At the bottom was one sentence.
I NEVER MET HER FACE TO FACE.
I looked at Rebecca.
She shook her head.
“It isn't me.”
“Then who?”
No answer.
The warehouse door slammed shut.
Lights came on.
A voice came over the speakers.
“You've been looking in the wrong direction.”
A screen flickered.
Evelyn appeared.
She smiled.
“Hello, Daniel.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Evelyn.”
She laughed.
“You always were slow.”
“What do you want?”
“Everything.”
She turned toward the camera.
“Robert's fortune.”
“Claire's trust.”
“Noah's inheritance.”
“Rebecca's silence.”
“And Daniel's loyalty.”
Daniel stared.
“My loyalty is gone.”
Evelyn smiled.
“Not yet.”
She pressed a button.
A video appeared.
It showed Daniel's sister as a child.
Then another.
His parents.
Then Daniel himself.
A young man signing documents.
Evelyn spoke softly.
“You've spent twenty-two years believing you were protecting your family.”
“You weren't.”
“You were protecting the machine.”
Daniel's face broke.
“What do you want me to do?”
“Bring me Robert.”
I stepped forward.
“No.”
Evelyn laughed.
“You always were stubborn.”
Then the screen changed.
Noah appeared.
A live camera.
He was in another room.
Claire screamed.
“Where is he?”
Evelyn replied:
“You have thirty minutes.”
Rebecca grabbed my arm.
“Don't go.”
“They have Noah.”
“We don't know if it's real.”
The screen showed Noah turning his head.
“Grandpa?”
I froze.
It was real.
Then Evelyn gave us the final instruction.
“Robert comes alone.”
The screen went black.
Daniel looked at me.
“You can't.”
I picked up my coat.
“She wants me.”
Rebecca said, “That's exactly why you shouldn't go.”
I looked at Claire.
Then Noah on the frozen screen.
“I spent years trusting the wrong people.”
May you like
I reached for the door.
“I'm done making that mistake.”
