Chapter 10 - My father's grave was in a private cemetery outside the city.I hadn't visited in years.

That morning, Elena came with me.
Daniel stayed behind with Claire and Noah.
The grave marker was simple.
George Hale.
Beloved father.
Businessman.
Patriarch.
I knelt beside it.
“What did you do?”
Elena stood behind me.
“Your father built the first version of the financial network.”
I looked back.
“Why?”
“To hide assets.”
“From whom?”
“Government investigators.”
“For what?”
Elena's answer was quiet.
“Criminal operations.”
I laughed bitterly.
“My father was a criminal?”
“Yes.”
“What kind?”
“Money laundering. Contract fraud. Political bribery.”
I stared at the grave.
“And Project Echo?”
“He created it.”
The world suddenly felt very small.
My father had built the system.
Samuel inherited parts of it.
Rebecca became involved.
Daniel's sister became involved.
And Claire had unknowingly become the center of it.
But why me?
Elena handed me an old photograph.
It showed my father.
Samuel.
Rebecca.
And another man.
A much younger Daniel.
My blood turned cold.
“Daniel was there?”
“Yes.”
“How old?”
“Twenty-six.”
I looked at the photograph.
“What happened?”
“My father recruited him.”
“For what?”
“Legal cover.”
I thought about all the years Daniel had represented me.
Twenty-two years.
All those documents.
All those signatures.
All those transactions.
I suddenly understood what Rebecca's warning meant.
Maybe Daniel wasn't the mastermind.
But he had been there from the beginning.
When I returned home, Daniel was waiting.
I put the photograph on the table.
He saw it.
He closed his eyes.
“I wondered when you'd find that.”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Enough to hate myself.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because your father had leverage.”
“Over you?”
“Over my family.”
He admitted it.
His sister Evelyn had been used by Project Echo.
She had tried to escape.
She was forced into hiding.
Daniel stayed because he believed obedience would keep her alive.
But Rebecca had found out.
She tried to expose the system.
That was why she disappeared.
I looked at him.
“Did she fake her death?”
“Yes.”
Claire stepped into the room.
“Why?”
Rebecca answered from the doorway.
We turned.
She was standing there.
Alive.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
Claire stared at her mother.
For several seconds neither moved.
Then Claire whispered:
“Mom?”
Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.
“I'm sorry.”
Claire slapped her.
The sound echoed through the room.
“You let me think you were dead.”
Rebecca didn't defend herself.
“I had no choice.”
“You had twenty years!”
“I was watching you.”
“From where?”
“Everywhere.”
Claire backed away.
“You watched me marry Derek?”
“Yes.”
“You watched him hurt me?”
Rebecca looked down.
“I tried to stop him.”
“You watched me lose my house.”
“I knew it was coming.”
Claire's face broke.
“And you did nothing.”
Rebecca looked at her.
“I was waiting for the right moment.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“The right moment?”
Rebecca stepped closer.
“The network was never about your money.”
“Then what was it about?”
“You.”
Claire froze.
Rebecca continued.
“When you were born, your grandfather placed assets in your name.”
“What assets?”
“The legacy fund.”
The number appeared on Daniel's screen.
$37 million.
Claire stared.
“That money was always mine?”
“Yes.”
“Why hide it?”
“Because your grandfather knew someone would eventually try to control it.”
“Who?”
Rebecca looked at me.
“Your father suspected you.”
I stiffened.
“Me?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Rebecca whispered:
“Samuel.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Rebecca continued.
“Samuel believed the only way to access the fund was through Noah.”
That explained Derek.
The marriage.
The false debts.
The townhouse.
The truck.
The $927,000.
Everything.
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
“And they knew Daniel would eventually be forced to help them.”
Daniel nodded.
He didn't deny it.
Then Rebecca said the sentence that made me understand the danger.
“We have forty-eight hours.”
“For what?”
“They know I came back.”
A car passed outside.
Rebecca looked toward the window.
“They'll move tonight.”
I reached for the curtains.
“Who?”
Rebecca whispered:
“Derek.”
Then she added:
“Samuel escaped.”
“Where is he?”
“I don't know.”
A loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Noah screamed.
Claire ran toward him.
I followed.
The bedroom door was open.
The window was shattered.
Noah's bed was empty.
On the floor was a single envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Noah.
Taken less than ten minutes earlier.
