Chapter 3 - The Night Harold Died

I couldn't breathe.

For seven years, I had believed my husband died peacefully in his sleep.

A heart attack.

That was what Daniel told me.

That was what the hospital told me.

That was what everyone told me.

Harold had been sixty-six.

He had worked too hard.

He had refused to slow down.

He had gone upstairs after dinner, kissed my forehead, and told me he was tired.

The next morning, Daniel found him.

That was the story.

The only story I had ever known.

Pierce connected his laptop to the office television.

A video file appeared.

The date was two days before Harold died.

The camera angle was strange.

It showed the side entrance of our house.

A timestamp appeared in the corner.

11:43 p.m.

Daniel stepped out.

I stared at the screen.

He looked younger.

Healthy.

Nervous.

He walked to a black SUV and spoke with someone inside.

Then Brooke appeared.

She held a folder.

My hands curled into fists.

Pierce paused the recording.

“You can stop.”

“No.”

He started it again.

Brooke handed Daniel the folder.

He opened it.

Even through the grainy video, I saw his expression change.

He looked furious.

Brooke pointed toward the house.

Then she said something.

There was no audio.

Daniel shook his head.

Brooke grabbed his arm.

He pulled away.

Then the SUV drove off.

The recording continued.

Two minutes later, Harold stepped outside.

He was holding a flashlight.

He stood on the driveway.

He looked toward the road.

Then he raised his phone.

I watched my husband make a call.

Pierce enlarged the image.

The number was visible.

It was his own.

My heart sank.

“Why was he calling you?”

“I didn't answer.”

“Why?”

Pierce looked ashamed.

“Because it was midnight, and I thought it could wait until morning.”

The video continued.

Harold returned inside.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then Daniel entered the house.

Alone.

My stomach dropped.

Daniel had always told me he arrived after Harold's death was discovered.

But the recording showed him inside the house at 12:21 a.m.

He walked upstairs.

The screen went dark.

Pierce switched to another camera.

It showed the hallway outside Harold's office.

Daniel appeared.

He entered.

Three minutes later, he came out holding a box.

My voice cracked.

“What is he carrying?”

Pierce enlarged the image.

A leather briefcase.

Harold's briefcase.

The one I had never been able to find after his death.

Daniel walked downstairs.

Then Brooke appeared.

They whispered together.

At 12:47 a.m., they left.

I stared at the frozen screen.

“Then Harold died three hours later.”

Pierce nodded.

“The official time of death was 3:18 a.m.”

I looked at him.

“Are you saying Daniel had something to do with it?”

“No.”

He pointed to the screen.

“I'm saying your husband believed Daniel was stealing from him, that Daniel had entered his office illegally, and that Harold was frightened enough to install hidden cameras.”

The next video started automatically.

This one was from inside the kitchen.

Harold sat at the table.

He spoke directly into the camera.

His voice was clear.

“Linda doesn't know.”

I covered my mouth.

Harold leaned closer.

“If you're watching this, then something has happened.”

He looked exhausted.

“I don't know whether Daniel can be saved.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“But I know this much. Brooke is not interested in this house because she loves it.”

The screen blurred from my tears.

Harold continued.

“She knows the property is worth more than anyone has told Linda.”

I stared.

The house had seemed modest compared with Brooke's social media fantasies.

But it sat on nearly two acres.

The neighborhood had transformed since Harold and I bought it.

The land value alone was enormous.

Harold rubbed his forehead.

“There's a development proposal coming.”

Pierce paused the video.

“Development proposal?”

I nodded.

“Keep going.”

Harold continued.

“A company wants to buy the neighboring land and combine it with our parcel.”

He looked toward the camera.

“If the property remains intact, Linda holds the controlling piece.”

I whispered, “Controlling piece of what?”

Harold's video ended.

Pierce opened another file.

This one was a document.

A development plan.

Thirty-two luxury townhouses.

The project required access through our property.

I stared at the numbers.

Then I saw the projected value.

The amount was almost twenty times what I had thought the house was worth.

My skin went cold.

“Brooke knew.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel knew.”

“Yes.”

“And the eviction?”

Pierce nodded.

“The trust prevented a sale while you lived there.”

I looked toward him.

“So they needed me out.”

“Exactly.”

I thought of Brooke's friends.

Her phone.

The black bag.

The staged humiliation.

It wasn't spontaneous.

It was a strategy.

Make me look unstable.

Make me leave voluntarily.

Then claim I had surrendered the property.

But one question remained.

Why had Harold mentioned the police?

Pierce looked at the clock.

“It gets worse.”

He clicked open the final file.

A scanned hospital record appeared.

My husband's medical report.

I frowned.

“This is his death report.”

“No.”

Pierce zoomed in.

“This is from six weeks before he died.”

There was an abnormality.

An unexplained medication.

A prescription Harold had never told me about.

I stared at the doctor's notes.

Then the final line.

Possible poisoning.

My chair scraped backward.

“No.”

Pierce didn't move.

“Linda.”

I looked at him.

“Someone may have been poisoning your husband.”

The room fell silent.

Then my phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Daniel.

I answered.

His voice was barely audible.

“Mom.”

“What?”

“Where are you?”

“Why?”

He swallowed.

“Because Brooke just found out about the cameras.”

I stood up.

“What happened?”

He whispered three words.

May you like

“She's coming for you.”
