Chapter 11 - The Arrest That Wasn't an Arrest

They broke the window first.

Then the door.

Then everything happened at once.

Rachel pulled me toward the basement.

Daniel stayed behind.

Brooke screamed.

Chelsea ran upstairs.

Evelyn disappeared through the side entrance.

The men in uniform came through the shattered doorway.

No badges I recognized.

No identification numbers.

No proper announcement.

Just weapons.

Rachel pushed open the basement panel.

“Move.”

We ran.

Behind us, someone shouted.

“She's in the cellar!”

I realized they knew about the hidden passage.

Harold had once told me this room could save a life.

I never believed him.

Now I was crawling through it in the dark.

The tunnel ended beneath the old garage.

Rachel opened a hatch.

We emerged outside.

Daniel followed.

Brooke didn't.

Chelsea did.

Evelyn did.

We ran through the trees behind the property.

A car waited on the road.

Rachel shoved me inside.

Daniel climbed in.

Chelsea hesitated.

Then she followed.

Evelyn did not.

She stood beneath the trees.

“Go.”

Rachel stared.

“Why are you letting us go?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Because this isn't over.”

The car sped away.

We drove in silence.

Then Daniel said:

“Mom.”

I looked at him.

“I have something.”

He pulled an envelope from inside his jacket.

“What is it?”

“Dad gave it to me the night before he died.”

I stared.

“You had this all along?”

“I didn't know what it was.”

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Harold and me.

But on the back was a message.

Linda,

The house is not your inheritance.

It is the key.

My hands shook.

Rachel read it over my shoulder.

“What key?”

The photograph showed Harold standing in front of the old cellar.

There was a metal box beside him.

I recognized it.

I had seen that box once.

Harold said it was empty.

It wasn't.

I remembered.

He had hidden it beneath the floorboards in the cellar.

We turned the car around.

“Mom,” Daniel said, “we can't go back.”

“We have to.”

“They'll be waiting.”

“Yes.”

Rachel stared at me.

“Why?”

“Because the people chasing me believe the secret is in the trust.”

I looked at the photograph.

“It isn't.”

“Then where?”

I tapped the image.

“In the house.”

When we returned, the police vehicles were gone.

The front door hung open.

The house looked abandoned.

We entered.

No one spoke.

I went straight to the cellar.

I found the loose floorboard.

Beneath it was the metal box.

The lock was old.

Harold's birthday was the combination.

I opened it.

Inside was a notebook.

Black leather.

Harold's handwriting.

The missing notebook.

Rachel whispered:

“This is it.”

I opened the first page.

Numbers.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Corporate structures.

Political donations.

Judicial contacts.

Private investigators.

And beside several names was a red mark.

One name appeared more than any other.

Pierce.

I flipped another page.

At the bottom was a handwritten line.

I was wrong about Daniel.

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

Then another line.

He is not the architect.

He is the pawn.

I looked at Daniel.

His face went pale.

I turned the page.

Brooke is compromised.

Chelsea is undercover.

Evelyn is dangerous.

Pierce is bought.

And then the final line.

But the person I fear most is the one Linda trusts without question.

I stopped.

Rachel looked at me.

“Who does Linda trust?”

I read the next page.

There was only one word.

Daniel.

My son stepped backward.

“No.”

I stared at him.

Daniel shook his head.

“Mom, I swear I didn't know.”

I said nothing.

Then the cellar door closed.

We all turned.

Someone had locked it from outside.

And a man's voice came through the wooden door.

“Harold was right.”

Pierce.

May you like

“We always did underestimate her.”
