Chapter 15 - What Belonged to Me

The development site was surrounded by temporary fencing and floodlights.

At 5:47 a.m., we entered through the unfinished access road.

The land looked like a wound cut into the earth.

Machines stood silent.

Cranes rose against the morning sky.

And beneath them, the old access tunnel disappeared underground.

Brooke was there.

Bound to a chair.

Chelsea stood beside her.

Evelyn stood across the room.

And behind them, under a single hanging light, was Thomas.

My brother.

Alive.

Older.

Cold.

He smiled when he saw me.

“Linda.”

I walked forward.

Harold stayed beside me.

Thomas looked at him.

“I always knew you'd survive.”

Harold said nothing.

Thomas laughed.

“You were always stubborn.”

“And you were always greedy.”

Thomas shrugged.

“Greed is just ambition without manners.”

I looked at Brooke.

She was crying.

Not because she regretted what she'd done.

Because she was afraid.

“Where is the signature?”

Thomas held out the contract.

“Right here.”

I looked at the papers.

Then at him.

“You're expecting me to sign.”

“Yes.”

“For Brooke.”

“Yes.”

“You think I'm going to cooperate because you threatened her.”

Thomas smiled.

“No.”

He pointed at Harold.

“I think you'll cooperate because you waited seven years to have your husband back.”

Harold stiffened.

Thomas laughed.

“That is the problem with love.”

He stepped closer.

“It gives people something to lose.”

I looked at Daniel.

He was standing near the entrance.

Rachel behind him.

Chelsea's eyes were fixed on Evelyn.

The room was silent.

I held the contract.

Then I smiled.

Thomas frowned.

“What?”

“You made the same mistake Brooke made.”

“What mistake?”

“You thought you understood what belonged to me.”

I tore the contract in half.

Thomas's expression changed.

Then I dropped the pieces onto the floor.

“You can keep your money.”

Evelyn lunged.

Rachel blocked her.

Daniel rushed toward Brooke.

Chelsea attacked the guard beside her.

The room exploded into chaos.

Thomas grabbed my arm.

Harold hit him.

They fell against the table.

I backed away.

Thomas reached for the gun at his waist.

Before he could raise it, Daniel tackled him.

The gun slid across the floor.

Harold kicked it away.

Police sirens sounded outside.

Real police this time.

The organized crime investigation had finally broken open.

Rachel had sent the entire evidence archive to federal investigators before we entered the site.

The recordings.

The bank records.

The payments.

The forged documents.

Everything.

Thomas was arrested.

Evelyn was arrested.

Pierce was arrested that afternoon.

Mark disappeared for two days before surrendering.

Chelsea entered witness protection.

Brooke survived.

But her perfect little life was gone.

The house was no longer a place where she could pretend.

Daniel spent the next year rebuilding his life.

He sold what remained of his stake in the failed company.

He paid every debt he could prove was his.

He divorced Brooke.

Not because I told him to.

Because he finally understood what she had turned him into.

As for me?

I went home.

The real home.

The one Harold and I had built.

A week later, I stood in the kitchen and looked at the cherry-red KitchenAid mixer.

Daniel had cleaned it.

Polished it.

Placed it exactly where it had always belonged.

He stood in the doorway.

“Mom?”

I looked back.

“Yes?”

“Can I come in?”

I smiled.

“You don't have to ask.”

He walked into the kitchen.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then he pointed toward the black trash bag sitting in the corner.

I had kept it.

“Why did you save that?”

I looked at the bag.

“Because it reminds me.”

“Of what?”

“That people reveal themselves when they think you've lost.”

Daniel nodded.

“I deserved what Brooke did to me.”

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“You made mistakes.”

I touched his shoulder.

“But you're still my son.”

He cried.

So did I.

Harold watched from the doorway.

He had changed.

We all had.

That evening, we sat together at the kitchen table.

The same table where Daniel had once saved grocery-store wages to buy my mixer.

The same table where Harold had counted bills.

The same table where I had packed a suitcase because my daughter-in-law told me I was no longer welcome in my own home.

I looked at Harold.

“I still can't believe you're here.”

He took my hand.

“I came back.”

“You took seven years.”

“I know.”

“You're making that up with interest.”

He smiled.

“I will.”

Outside, the sun disappeared behind the trees.

The house became quiet.

Peaceful.

Almost normal.

Then a car stopped at the gate.

Harold looked toward the window.

Daniel stood.

“Are we expecting someone?”

“No.”

The doorbell rang.

Once.

Then twice.

A man in a dark suit stood outside.

He held a thin envelope.

I opened the door.

“Mrs. Wentworth?”

“Yes?”

He offered the envelope.

“This was recovered from a private vault belonging to Thomas.”

I looked at Harold.

He nodded.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Thomas had taken it years earlier.

It showed our family.

Harold.

Me.

Daniel.

And a baby boy I didn't recognize.

On the back was a date.

Three months before Daniel was born.

And beneath it were seven words:

HE IS NOT YOUR SON.

I stared at the photograph.

Harold's face went completely white.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What does it mean?”

I looked at my husband.

He couldn't answer.

Then his eyes filled with tears.

And for the second time in one lifetime, the truth I thought I knew began to crack apart.

The man standing beside me whispered:

“Linda…”

I turned.

Harold looked at the photograph.

Then at Daniel.

Then at me.

“I was hoping you'd never find that.”
