Chapter 13 - The Inheritance WarThe Sister Who Could Take EverythingThe room fell silent.

Elise stood frozen.
Richard smiled.
“You thought you were the favored daughter.”
He looked at me.
“You're not.”
Patrick stepped forward.
“That's not what the trust says.”
Richard laughed.
“You haven't seen the final amendment.”
He produced a document.
An amendment supposedly signed by my father.
It named Elise as sole beneficiary.
Caleb looked at me.
I looked at Patrick.
Patrick did not appear worried.
“It's forged,” he said.
Richard shook his head.
“Prove it.”
The police seized the document.
Richard was taken away.
Victor followed.
Harper's parents were escorted out.
Harper remained in the chair, crying.
Once the room was clear, Patrick examined the amendment.
Then he smiled.
“This is exactly what I expected.”
“What?”
“The signature is authentic.”
I stared.
“Then it is real?”
“No.”
He pointed toward the ink.
“The signature was traced from another document.”
“How can you tell?”
“Your father signed with his right hand.”
Richard's document showed pressure patterns inconsistent with the original.
A forensic examiner later confirmed it.
Forgery.
The trust remained intact.
But there was another surprise.
The trust had two equal beneficiaries.
Me.
And Elise.
Half each.
I looked at my sister.
She looked at me.
“We have been fighting over something that was meant for both of us.”
She nodded.
Then the estate lawyer read another clause.
If either sister rejected the inheritance, their share would be transferred to the other.
Elise frowned.
“And if we both accept?”
“The trust continues under joint management.”
Patrick smiled.
“Which means nobody can manipulate either one individually.”
I understood immediately.
My father had designed the trust to protect us from exactly what happened.
He knew greed could divide a family.
So he built a structure that required cooperation.
I turned toward Elise.
“What do you want?”
She looked at me.
“What did you want?”
I thought about the condo.
The ocean.
The life I had built.
“I don't need millions to prove my worth.”
She smiled through tears.
“Neither do I.”
Then I turned toward Harper.
She had been listening.
She looked broken.
Not innocent.
Not blameless.
But human.
“Why?”
Harper lowered her eyes.
“My parents were drowning in debt.”
“You could have asked.”
“I was ashamed.”
“So you stole.”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever love Caleb?”
She began to cry.
“Yes.”
“Then why did you risk destroying him?”
She whispered:
“Because I convinced myself I could fix everything before he found out.”
Caleb stood silently.
I looked at him.
“What are you going to do?”
He looked at Harper.
Then at me.
“I don't know.”
I nodded.
He needed to decide for himself.
The next morning, news broke.
Victor Hale had been formally charged.
Richard Cole faced charges for fraud, conspiracy, and the murder investigation surrounding my father.
Harper was charged with multiple financial crimes but agreed to cooperate.
She provided evidence.
Emails.
Bank transfers.
Recordings.
Names.
The investigation expanded.
Then came the piece that stunned everyone.
The prosecutor informed us that Harper had not simply been helping Victor.
She had also been working with Richard.
She had secretly recorded conversations because she feared they would turn on her.
One recording was played for us.
Richard's voice:
“Once Barbara signs, Caleb becomes useful.”
Harper asked:
“And if she doesn't?”
Richard answered:
“She won't be given a choice.”
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?”
The recording continued.
“She has a son she loves.”
Caleb went pale.
Richard's voice remained calm.
“We'll make sure she fears losing him.”
I looked at my son.
The manipulation had gone deeper than either of us realized.
Then another recording played.
Victor's voice.
“Richard, what about Elise?”
Richard answered:
“She'll take care of Barbara.”
I looked at my sister.
“What did they mean?”
Elise shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Then the prosecutor played the final recording.
Elise's voice.
I froze.
She was speaking to Richard.
“I'll meet her myself.”
Caleb stared at me.
I stared at Elise.
“Why did you agree to meet him?”
Elise looked devastated.
“I thought I could expose him.”
The room went silent.
Then she added something.
“I never told him where the hidden room was.”
I stepped toward her.
“Then how did Richard find it?”
Elise looked at me.
“I didn't tell him.”
A detective entered.
“We may know.”
He held up an evidence bag.
Inside was my old brass lamp.
The lamp I had hidden the key inside.
Someone had tampered with the base after the police search.
The hidden room had not been discovered because of Elise.
Someone had been inside my condo again.

And according to the hallway camera, the person who entered was...
Caleb.
