Chapter 11 - The Sister I Never KnewShe Had Been Watching MeElise sat across from me in an interrogation room.

She looked like my father.
That was the first thing I noticed.
The eyes.
The jaw.
The shape of her hands.
Twenty minutes into the conversation, I stopped asking how.
I asked why.
“Why did you break into my home?”
She stared at the table.
“Because Victor said you were going to destroy everything.”
“Everything?”
“My father's legacy.”
I frowned.
“Your father never left you anything?”
She laughed bitterly.
“He left me the truth.”
“What truth?”
“That he planned to protect you.”
My heart tightened.
“You knew about me.”
“My whole life.”
“Then why didn't you contact me?”
“Because Victor convinced me you had taken everything.”
I stared at her.
She had believed a lie for decades.
The same kind of lie my mother had lived with.
Victor had kept us apart.
He had controlled information.
He had created competing stories.
Elise believed I was the favored daughter.
I believed my father abandoned me.
Both stories had protected Victor.
Patrick entered the room.
“We need to talk about the contract.”
Elise looked at him.
“I signed something.”
“Show me.”
She reached into her bag.
A document.
She had signed it years earlier.
It gave Victor temporary control over assets inherited from her father.
But the signature line was incomplete.
She had not actually transferred ownership.
Victor had tried to use it anyway.
Patrick looked at me.
“He needed both sisters.”
I finally understood.
The trust may have been designed to protect both children.
Victor needed me to surrender control of the condo.
He needed Elise to challenge my inheritance rights.
Then he could claim the estate was disputed.
While everyone fought, he would move assets.
A perfect trap.
Elise looked at me.
“I'm sorry.”
I wanted to hate her.
Instead, I saw another person manipulated by Victor.
Another person who had been fed a version of reality.
I reached across the table.
She hesitated.
Then took my hand.
“My father loved you,” she whispered.
I started crying.
It was the first time anyone had said those words to me.
Then Elise said something else.
“He left a second recording.”
Patrick leaned forward.
“What recording?”
“A message for both of us.”
She had hidden it inside the same storage unit where the first videotape was found.
The investigators retrieved it.
We watched.
My father appeared older this time.
Tired.
He spoke directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this, Victor survived long enough to come after my children.”
He paused.
“I left something where he would never look.”
Patrick leaned forward.
“Where?”
My father smiled faintly.
“In the one place he believes is already his.”
Then the screen went black.
We looked at one another.
“What place?” Caleb asked.
Patrick stared at the footage.
Then at me.
“The condo.”
We returned home.
We searched every room.
Floorboards.
Walls.
Cabinets.
Ceilings.
Nothing.
Then I remembered something.
One of my lamps.
An old brass lamp my mother had given me.
I unscrewed the base.
Something rattled inside.
A tiny brass cylinder fell into my hand.
Inside was a key.
And a handwritten note.
This key opens the room beneath the ocean.
I looked at Patrick.
“There's no room beneath the ocean.”
He studied the key.
Then the building plans.
His eyes widened.
“There used to be.”
“What?”
“A maintenance chamber.”
Below the foundation.
Sealed during renovations decades ago.
According to the plans, it had been removed.
Patrick stared at the blueprint.
“Unless the chamber wasn't removed.”
We found the access point behind a false wall.
A hidden staircase descended beneath the condo.
At the bottom was a steel door.
The brass key fit perfectly.
The room inside was untouched.
Boxes.
Files.
Photographs.
And one final folder.
On the cover:
FOR BARBARA.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter from my father.
Only one line was visible.
The man who betrayed me is not Victor Hale.
I stopped.
Patrick leaned closer.
I turned the page.
And saw the second name.
May you like
It belonged to someone I had trusted for twenty years.
Patrick Reynolds.
