Chapter 12 - The Attorney's SecretPatrick Knew More Than He Told MeI stared at Patrick.

He did not move.

Caleb looked from me to him.

“What is that?”

I held up the document.

Patrick read it.

His face went pale.

“Barbara, let me explain.”

I stepped back.

“You have ten seconds.”

His eyes stayed on mine.

“I knew your father.”

My heart stopped.

“You knew him?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Before he disappeared.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Patrick continued.

“I was a junior attorney working with his company.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because your mother asked me not to.”

I felt sick.

“You've known the truth all these years?”

“Not all of it.”

“Enough.”

“Yes.”

Caleb looked stunned.

“Then why did you help Mom?”

Patrick answered quietly.

“Because I promised your grandmother I would.”

“My grandmother?”

“Your mother's mother knew your father was in danger.”

He reached into the folder.

Another letter.

This one was from my mother.

She had named Patrick as the family's legal protector.

Not as someone who controlled me.

As someone who watched the trust.

The original trust documents had been stored with him.

So why had Victor been able to manipulate things?

Patrick explained.

He had been trying to locate missing pages for years.

Someone had been accessing old files.

Someone with credentials.

Someone who knew how the legal system worked.

I stared at him.

“You suspect another attorney.”

Patrick nodded.

“A man named Richard Cole.”

I recognized the name.

He represented Harper's parents.

The same man who had appeared at Patrick's office.

I felt the puzzle lock into place.

Richard Cole had been Victor's legal cover.

He had created sham companies.

Filed fraudulent property documents.

And helped push the medical guardianship strategy.

But there was still one question.

Why did my father write that Victor was not the betrayer?

Patrick turned the page.

The answer was devastating.

Victor had not ordered my father's murder.

Someone else had.

Richard's father.

Richard Cole Senior.

He had been my father's business partner.

Victor had covered up the crime.

And now Richard was using Harper, Victor, and even Elise.

Everyone had been pieces.

Patrick continued.

“Your father's final asset transfer was supposed to activate when you turned twenty-five.”

“But someone blocked it.”

“Richard.”

“Why?”

“Because the estate was worth far more than anyone knew.”

Patrick showed me an old valuation.

More than $30 million.

Not $14.8 million.

Thirty million.

My knees nearly failed.

All those years of working overtime.

Saving every dollar.

Skipping vacations.

I had spent my life believing we were struggling.

Meanwhile, my father had built a fortune intended for his children.

But there was another clause.

One that changed everything.

The trust could only remain protected if neither beneficiary knowingly participated in fraudulent transfer.

That was why Victor needed me to sign.

And why he needed Caleb to appear involved.

They were trying to create a legal justification to block my inheritance.

I looked at Caleb.

He understood.

“They wanted you to look like you were giving it away voluntarily.”

“Yes.”

Then the phone rang.

The police.

Richard Cole had fled the city.

Victor had disappeared.

And Harper's parents had also vanished.

Patrick looked at me.

“They're moving now.”

“Where?”

“We don't know.”

Then Elise found something in the old room.

A map.

Marked with three locations.

One was the condo.

One was my father's old office.

The third was an estate inland.

Beside it was a note.

Final transfer at midnight.

Patrick looked at the time.

11:07 PM.

“We have less than an hour.”

We rushed outside.

Caleb drove.

Elise followed in another car.

Police were on the way.

When we reached the estate, the gates were open.

The house was dark.

Too dark.

Then we heard shouting.

Inside, Harper was tied to a chair.

Her parents were on their knees.

Richard stood near the fireplace.

Victor stood beside him.

And a table was covered with documents.

Richard looked at me.

“Barbara Collins.”

He smiled.

“You've been very difficult.”

I stepped forward.

“You murdered my father.”

His expression did not change.

“You finally understand.”

Victor looked uneasy.

Richard turned toward him.

“You were supposed to control the woman.”

Victor whispered something.

Richard suddenly pulled a gun.

“Enough.”

Harper screamed.

Caleb moved.

Richard raised the weapon.

Then the lights came on.

Police flooded the room.

Richard was arrested.

Victor dropped his weapon.

For a moment, I thought it was over.

Then Richard laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

He looked directly at me.

“The trust doesn't belong to you.”

Patrick stepped forward.

“Yes, it does.”

Richard smiled.

“No.”

May you like

He pointed toward Elise.

“It belongs to her.”
