Chapter 8 - The officer raised his badge."Detective Mason."

Caleb didn't move.

"How did you find us?"

Mason smiled.

"Your phone."

I immediately checked mine.

No signal.

He pointed toward the cemetery gate.

"GPS doesn't need your permission."

Tyler whispered:

"We're surrounded."

Mason looked at him.

"Tyler."

Tyler's face hardened.

"You know me."

"Of course."

"Who do you work for?"

Mason smiled.

"The same people who've been protecting your family."

"Protecting us?"

Mason looked toward me.

"No."

He pointed at the pendant.

"Protecting what belongs to them."

I stepped back.

"What is this key?"

Mason's expression changed.

"For years, Northstar thought your mother had destroyed the final ledger."

"What ledger?"

"The one that can expose every person involved."

He looked at Caleb.

"Politicians. Judges. Police officers. Bank executives."

Then Tyler.

"Your father."

Caleb stepped forward.

"My father was involved?"

"He built the system."

Mason sighed.

"Then tried to shut it down."

"Who runs Northstar?"

Mason smiled.

"You've already met him."

The SUV door opened.

A man stepped out.

Older.

Gray hair.

Elegant suit.

Caleb froze.

"Dad?"

The man smiled.

But he wasn't Caleb's father.

He was the man from the photograph.

The hotel.

The cemetery.

The shadow behind everything.

Mason bowed his head.

"Mr. Carter."

I couldn't move.

Caleb stared.

"You're supposed to be dead."

The man smiled.

"People are often dead when it becomes convenient."

Then he looked at me.

"You have your mother's eyes."

"Where is she?"

His smile disappeared.

"She made a mistake."

"What mistake?"

"She trusted your husband."

Caleb stepped forward.

"Leave her out of this."

The man laughed.

"You still don't understand."

He pointed at Tyler.

"Your brother was never taken."

Caleb looked shocked.

"Then what was he?"

"A replacement."

Tyler's face turned pale.

Mason grabbed Tyler.

Tyler fought.

The man looked at me.

"We don't need your husband."

He paused.

"We need you."

I tightened my grip around the black key.

"Why?"

"Because your mother hid the ledger somewhere no one could find it."

"Where?"

"Inside you."

My stomach dropped.

"What?"

The man smiled.

"Do you remember the surgery when you were nine?"

I felt dizzy.

"There was no surgery."

"There was."

He stepped closer.

"The memory was removed."

Caleb looked at me.

I could barely hear his voice.

"What is he talking about?"

The man answered:

"Your mother hid the ledger where only you could carry it."

He pointed at my head.

"You've had the key your entire life."

Then he looked at Caleb.

"And now we finally know how to unlock it."

A gunshot exploded.

Mason dropped.

Everyone screamed.

A second vehicle crashed through the cemetery gate.

The driver's door flew open.

An older woman stepped out.

My heart stopped.

She looked directly at me.

I knew that face.

Even after nineteen years.

"Mom?"

May you like

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Run."
