Chapter 15 - The video began with my father sitting in the same basement. He looked exhausted.

Afraid.

Behind him stood my mother.

And three children.

Caleb.

Tyler.

Me.

I stared at the screen.

My father spoke directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, Northstar has survived longer than I expected."

He paused.

"The ledger is not the most dangerous thing."

My mother looked at him.

He continued.

"The most dangerous thing is the project."

Caleb took my hand.

My father's voice became quieter.

"Northstar learned that money can be replaced."

The image changed.

Documents.

Medical records.

Photographs.

Children.

"We discovered that identity can be replaced too."

My stomach tightened.

"People can be trained to forget."

The screen showed me as a child.

A doctor.

A hospital room.

A procedure.

My father continued:

"But memory leaves patterns."

He looked directly at the camera.

"So I created a fail-safe."

A sequence of sounds played.

A nursery rhyme.

Three knocks.

Three numbers.

Then the pendant appeared on screen.

"The key doesn't unlock a door."

He looked at me.

"It unlocks her memory."

My mother covered her mouth.

The recording showed my nine-year-old self sitting in a chair.

My father knelt before me.

"If anything happens, you will forget this."

I watched myself nod.

He continued.

"You will forget the basement."

"Forget Northstar."

"Forget Tyler."

"Forget Caleb."

I stopped breathing.

Caleb looked at me.

"Why me?"

The recording continued.

"Because the only way to protect the ledger was to hide the truth inside the strongest memory she had."

Then my father said the words that changed everything.

"She won't remember the ledger."

"She'll remember the people."

The screen showed Tyler.

Then Caleb.

Then me.

A triangle.

Three lives connected by one secret.

My father looked directly into the camera.

"And if Northstar ever finds her, the memory will return."

The video ended.

The room went silent.

Marlene sat on the floor.

Tyler stared at Caleb.

Agent Bennett closed the laptop.

"It's over."

I shook my head.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

"There is more."

I could feel something returning.

Not one memory.

Hundreds.

I remembered Vale.

My father.

My mother.

The basement.

The black box.

But one memory was different.

Something I had never seen before.

A second basement.

A second ledger.

A second key.

And a name.

I whispered it.

Agent Bennett immediately reached for her phone.

"What did you say?"

"Northstar wasn't run by Vale."

She froze.

"Who was?"

I looked at Marlene.

Her face turned white.

Then Caleb.

Then Tyler.

And finally toward the security camera above us.

"The person who created Northstar."

Vale's dead body had been lying in the hallway.

Yet his voice suddenly came through the speakers.

"You finally remembered."

Everyone froze.

A hidden screen opened.

A live video appeared.

Vale was sitting somewhere else.

Alive.

The body in the hallway had been the impostor.

He smiled.

"But you're too late."

The screen showed a countdown.

00:09:51

Agent Bennett stared.

"What is that?"

Vale answered:

"The purge."

The files started disappearing.

Account after account.

Name after name.

Evidence.

Everything.

My father had built a fail-safe.

Vale had built another.

One that could erase Northstar before the world could see it.

I looked at the terminal.

"Can we stop it?"

Agent Bennett nodded.

"But we need the master key."

I touched my pendant.

"The key isn't the pendant."

I looked toward Tyler.

He understood first.

"The black box."

We found it beneath the red door.

Inside was a second key.

A fingerprint scanner.

And one final envelope.

I opened it.

There was a single line.

THE PERSON YOU TRUST MOST IS THE FINAL KEY.

I looked at Caleb.

He looked at me.

Then Tyler.

Then my mother.

Four people.

One traitor.

The countdown showed:

00:03:18

Agent Bennett shouted:

"We have three minutes!"

Tyler stepped toward the machine.

"I'll do it."

Caleb stopped him.

"No."

"You're my brother."

"And you're exactly who Northstar trained to sacrifice."

Tyler smiled.

"Then let me make one choice they didn't program."

He took the key.

I grabbed his arm.

"Don't."

He looked at me.

"For years I stole from you."

Tears filled his eyes.

"Tonight I'm giving something back."

He inserted the key.

The system rejected it.

IDENTITY ERROR.

Tyler looked at Caleb.

"You're the key."

Caleb stepped forward.

He placed his hand on the scanner.

The screen changed.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

The countdown stopped.

Every file froze.

Then the entire system uploaded to the FBI network.

Names.

Accounts.

Recordings.

Photographs.

Everything.

Vale's face appeared one final time.

"You think this ends here?"

He smiled.

"There are thirteen other Northstars."

The screen went black.

No one spoke.

Outside, sirens began filling the streets.

My mother reached for my hand.

Caleb stood beside me.

Tyler sat against the wall.

For the first time in decades, nobody was hiding.

Or at least, that's what I thought.

Because Agent Bennett suddenly looked at the final file.

Her face drained of color.

"What?"

She turned the monitor toward us.

A message had appeared after the upload.

Not from Vale.

Not from Northstar.

From someone else.

CONGRATULATIONS. YOU FOUND THE NETWORK.

A second line appeared.

NOW FIND WHO BUILT IT.

Then a third.

HE IS ALREADY IN THE ROOM.

Every person stopped breathing.

I looked at Caleb.

Tyler.

My mother.

Agent Bennett.

Then slowly...

Toward the dark corner behind us.

A figure stepped out of the shadows.

And smiled.

The camera above us turned toward him.

The red recording light switched on.

May you like

Again.

REC.
