Chapter 10 - When we returned home, the police were already gone. The house was dark.

The kitchen looked exactly as it had after dinner.

Broken bowl.

Burn marks.

Shattered glass.

But my mother walked straight to the pantry.

She removed three jars from the shelf.

Then she tapped the wall.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Nothing happened.

She turned to me.

"Your turn."

I laughed nervously.

"I don't know what I'm doing."

"You do."

I touched the pendant.

Then the wall.

Three knocks.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside was a small metal cassette player.

My mother inserted an old cassette.

A child's voice began singing.

I froze.

It was me.

Nine years old.

Singing a nursery rhyme I hadn't heard in years.

Then another voice.

My father's.

"Say the numbers."

Child-me giggled.

"Three."

Pause.

"One."

Pause.

"Seven."

My entire body went cold.

The hotel room.

The cemetery vault.

It had been the key all along.

Then the recording changed.

My father's voice became serious.

"If you hear this, I'm probably dead."

Caleb closed his eyes.

The voice continued.

"The ledger isn't inside the girl."

I looked at my mother.

"It never was."

Static.

"It is in the place she remembers but cannot name."

The recording ended.

I whispered:

"The place I can't name."

My mother nodded.

"You have to remember."

I closed my eyes.

I saw a hallway.

Blue walls.

A red door.

A clock.

A woman crying.

A man shouting.

Then a basement.

A metal cabinet.

A black box.

I gasped.

"The basement."

Caleb grabbed a flashlight.

"Our basement?"

I nodded.

We went downstairs.

The basement was filled with old furniture.

Boxes.

Tools.

Christmas decorations.

Then I saw it.

A red door.

I had never noticed it before.

My mother touched my shoulder.

"You used to play behind that door."

I opened it.

Inside was a narrow room.

A child's drawings covered the walls.

One drawing showed a family.

A father.

A mother.

Two boys.

And a little girl.

I stared at the boys.

One was Caleb.

The other was Tyler.

My mother whispered:

"You were all together here once."

I felt another memory surface.

Tyler laughing.

Caleb holding my hand.

My father kneeling in front of us.

Then a loud bang.

A man entering.

Richard Vale.

My mother screaming.

My father giving her a black box.

Then my mother taking me away.

The memory broke.

I fell to the floor.

"He took the box."

"Who?"

"Tyler."

Everyone froze.

I remembered.

Young Tyler had carried the black box into the hallway.

But he hadn't betrayed us.

He had hidden it.

Behind the red door.

I looked at the wall.

There was a loose brick.

I pulled it free.

The black box was still there.

Inside was the ledger.

Thousands of names.

Thousands of transactions.

And a final document.

Caleb picked it up.

His face went pale.

"What?"

He couldn't speak.

I took the document.

At the top was a single sentence:

NORTHSTAR'S FINAL HEIR: CALeb Carter.

I looked at him.

"What does this mean?"

Before he could answer, the basement lights came on.

Someone clapped slowly from the stairs.

Vale.

He smiled.

"Now you finally understand."

May you like

Then he said:

"Caleb was never the son we thought he was."
