Chapter 13 - The Bloodline Nobody Saw ComingEverything unraveled at once.

The photograph proved something impossible.

Chioma's father had been secretly connected to Donald's mother.

But what was the connection?

Inspector Adeyemi returned immediately.

“This photograph changes the entire investigation.”

“What does it mean?”

“We don't know yet.”

Mr. Nwosu finally told the truth.

Years ago, Donald's mother had an affair with Chioma's father.

It lasted only a short time.

But a child was born.

That child was Emeka.

Or so everyone had believed.

Ebere had hidden the truth because she feared both families.

But then a second secret emerged.

The child in the photograph was not Emeka.

It was another baby.

One whose identity had been changed.

Emeka stared at the photograph.

“So who am I?”

Mr. Nwosu closed his eyes.

“Your father was not the man you thought.”

Emeka's face tightened.

“Then who?”

“Donald's father.”

Silence.

Emeka staggered backward.

Chioma stared.

“Then Emeka is Donald's brother?”

“Yes.”

Suddenly everything made sense.

Donald had not merely been trying to destroy a rival.

He had been trying to bury his own brother.

Emeka looked devastated.

“All my life
”

“You were told your father abandoned your mother,” Mr. Nwosu said.

“Because he was ashamed.”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because Donald's father ordered the birth records changed.”

The family tree had been altered.

Names changed.

Documents destroyed.

Children separated.

Property hidden.

And Donald had known.

He had used those secrets as weapons.

Emeka looked at Chioma.

“I am sorry.”

She was crying.

“This wasn't our fault.”

“But Donald knew.”

“Yes.”

Inspector Adeyemi said:

“And there is something else.”

He placed a file on the table.

“Donald never legally divorced you.”

Chioma stared.

“What?”

“The papers he gave you were forged.”

Emeka looked up.

“Then why?”

“Because he wanted you to believe you had lost all claim to his assets.”

Chioma's breath caught.

Adeyemi continued.

“Your marriage is still legally valid.”

Chioma stared at the papers.

Donald had beaten her.

Thrown her out.

Announced a divorce.

And yet legally, she remained his wife.

Why?

Because Donald had made a mistake.

A massive one.

The forged divorce had invalidated the asset transfer.

The property, companies, and accounts tied to the marriage were now exposed to legal scrutiny.

Amaka smiled faintly.

“That means he has trapped himself.”

“But can we prove the fraud?” Chioma asked.

“Yes.”

“With the recording.”

They listened again to the basement recording.

Donald’s voice.

His threats.

His admissions.

His plan.

But the final piece was missing.

His original financial ledger.

Without it, he could claim the recordings were fabricated.

“Where is the ledger?” Chioma asked.

Amaka said:

“Donald has it.”

“Where?”

“At his private mansion.”

“The one he threw me out of?”

“Yes.”

Chioma looked at Emeka.

“We go back.”

“No,” he said.

“I have to.”

“He will expect you.”

“That is why it will work.”

That night, Chioma returned to Donald's mansion with Inspector Adeyemi secretly following.

She entered through the front door.

The housekeeper screamed.

“Madam!”

Chioma walked in calmly.

“This is still my home.”

Donald appeared on the staircase.

He looked stunned.

“You.”

Chioma smiled.

“Yes.”

“You were ordered to stay away.”

“By whom?”

“By your lawyer.”

“He isn't my husband.”

Donald descended the stairs.

“You have no idea what you are doing.”

“I know exactly what I am doing.”

She placed the divorce paper on the table.

“This is forged.”

Donald's face changed.

Chioma stepped closer.

“You never divorced me.”

He said nothing.

“And now every lie you told me is evidence.”

Donald suddenly laughed.

“You came back for revenge?”

“No.”

She held up her phone.

“I came back for the ledger.”

Donald stared at her.

Then slowly smiled.

“It's in the basement.”

Chioma froze.

“Go get it.”

She followed him.

He opened the basement door.

The room was empty.

No ledger.

No files.

Nothing.

Donald closed the door behind her.

The lock clicked.

Chioma spun around.

Donald smiled.

“You wanted the truth.”

He stepped closer.

“Now you can stay with it.”

The basement lights went out.

Then a hidden speaker activated.

A child's voice whispered:

“Mommy?”

Chioma froze.

She had never heard the voice before.

May you like

Donald said softly:

“That is what you never knew about your own family.”
