Chapter 10 - The Woman Who Came Back“Who is that?”

Donald turned sharply.

The woman stepped out from between the trees.

Chioma covered her mouth.

“No
”

Ebere staggered backward.

“Amaka.”

Amaka.

Donald’s former secretary.

The woman everyone had been told died in a car accident two years earlier.

She was alive.

And she was holding a gun.

Donald stared at her with fury.

“You.”

“You thought I was dead.”

“You should have stayed dead.”

Amaka laughed.

“You first.”

She fired into the air.

Donald’s men scattered.

Emeka rushed toward the hostage.

Chioma grabbed the documents.

Mr. Nwosu pulled his son away.

The entire scene exploded into confusion.

“Run!” Amaka shouted.

They escaped into the trees.

After several minutes, they reached an abandoned church.

Everyone collapsed inside.

Chioma looked at Amaka.

“You were Donald's secretary.”

“Yes.”

“You knew all of this?”

“I knew enough to survive.”

“How did you survive the accident?”

“Because it was never an accident.”

She revealed that Donald had ordered his driver to cause the crash.

She survived because she had been thrown from the vehicle.

“He wanted me dead because I copied his records.”

“Where are they?”

“In a place he can never reach.”

Chioma asked:

“Why help me?”

Amaka looked at her.

“Because I promised someone.”

“Who?”

Amaka hesitated.

“Emeka.”

Chioma stared at him.

“You knew her?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before your wedding.”

Chioma looked at Emeka.

“You knew?”

“I knew Amaka had evidence.”

“But you never told me.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

Chioma looked away.

“I am tired of people deciding what I should know.”

Emeka lowered his head.

“You are right.”

Amaka opened her bag.

Inside was a ledger.

Donald’s secret accounts.

Payments.

Names.

Politicians.

Companies.

Police officers.

And one final page.

Chioma saw her mother's name.

Again.

But this time, beside it was a handwritten note:

EBERE AGREED TO DELIVER CHIOMA.

Chioma's heart stopped.

“Deliver me?”

Ebere burst into tears.

“It doesn't mean what you think.”

“Then explain it.”

“I promised Donald I would bring you to Lagos.”

“For what?”

Ebere looked at Donald's name on the page.

“He said he wanted to marry you.”

“That still doesn't explain it.”

Ebere whispered:

“He said if I didn't, he would destroy our entire family.”

Chioma stared at her.

“And you agreed.”

“Yes.”

Chioma slowly stepped away.

“I spent years believing my marriage was fate.”

“It was not.”

“I thought Donald loved me.”

“He never did.”

Then Amaka said the sentence that stunned everyone.

“Neither did Donald's second wife.”

Chioma looked at her.

“Second wife?”

Amaka nodded.

“Donald's marriage to you was not his first.”

Chioma stared.

“He had another wife before me?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to her?”

Amaka looked toward Emeka.

“She disappeared.”

Chioma felt sick.

“How many women?”

Amaka's expression darkened.

“Three.”

Silence.

“Three wives disappeared after discovering Donald's financial crimes.”

Chioma looked at Emeka.

“Why did he let me live?”

Emeka answered:

“Because you haven't signed the final transfer.”

Amaka suddenly pulled out another document.

“There's one more thing.”

“What?”

“This document proves Donald's marriage to Chioma was built on fraud.”

Chioma grabbed it.

At the bottom was a clause she had never seen.

Her eyes widened.

“What does this mean?”

Amaka looked at her.

“It means that if Donald is exposed
”

A pause.

“
you inherit everything he owns.”

Everyone stared.

Then Amaka's phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed.

“What happened?” Chioma asked.

Amaka slowly lowered the phone.

“Donald has released a statement.”

“What statement?”

“He says you murdered his brother.”

Chioma went still.

“And he has witnesses.”

“Who?”

May you like

Amaka looked directly at Ebere.

“Your mother.”
