Chapter 12 - What Really Happened to Chioma's FatherEbere survived.

Barely.
Doctors operated through the night.
Chioma sat outside the theater with blood on her hands.
She could not stop hearing her mother's final words.
Your father never died naturally.
By morning, an investigator arrived.
His name was Inspector Adeyemi.
âWe need to talk.â
âAbout Donald?â
âAbout your father.â
Chioma looked up.
âHe died twenty years ago.â
âYes.â
âHow?â
âOfficially? Heart failure.â
âAnd unofficially?â
Adeyemi opened a file.
âPoisoning.â
Chioma's hands went cold.
âWho?â
âWe don't know.â
âThen why are you showing me this?â
âBecause the case was reopened after we found financial records connecting your father to Donald's family.â
He showed her a photograph.
Her father.
Donaldâs father.
And a much younger Ebere.
âYour father discovered the illegal land transfers.â
âSo they killed him.â
âThat's one theory.â
âWho else had access?â
Adeyemi looked at her.
âYour mother.â
Chioma closed her eyes.
âI don't want to hear this anymore.â
âYou need to.â
He placed another file on the table.
âYour father had a second child.â
Chioma frowned.
âI have Dubem.â
âNot Dubem.â
She stared at him.
âWho?â
Adeyemi said:
âYour father had a son before your marriage.â
Chioma's heartbeat quickened.
âA son?â
âYes.â
âWhere is he?â
âWe don't know.â
Then something clicked inside her.
Mr. Nwosu.
The old photograph.
The hidden documents.
Emeka.
Could it be?
She rushed to find Mr. Nwosu.
He was beneath the mango tree.
âTell me the truth.â
He stared at her.
âAbout what?â
âMy father had another son.â
Mr. Nwosu remained silent.
âWho?â
He finally answered:
âEmeka.â
Chioma felt the world stop.
âWhat?â
âEmeka's mother was your father's first love.â
âNo.â
âShe was.â
âThenâŠâ
âEmeka is your half-brother.â
Chioma stared at him in horror.
âThat's impossible.â
Emeka, standing behind her, heard every word.
He slowly stepped forward.
âYou knew?â
Mr. Nwosu nodded.
âAll these years?â
âYes.â
Emeka's face crumpled.
âWhy didn't you tell me?â
âBecause your father died before he could.â
Chioma shook her head.
âBut weâŠâ
She couldn't finish.
Everything she remembered suddenly became poisoned by a truth she had never known.
Their love.
Their relationship.
Their broken engagement.
Their entire past.
Was it all a lie?
Emeka looked at her.
âI didn't know.â
Chioma began to cry.
âI didn't know either.â
The silence between them was unbearable.
Then Mr. Nwosu said:
âThere is more.â
They both looked at him.
âDonald knew.â
Chioma's face went pale.
âHe knew?â
âYes.â
âBefore he married me?â
âYes.â
Emeka clenched his fists.
âThat was why he wanted me gone.â
Chioma whispered:
âHe knew we were related.â
âYes.â
âThen he watched usâŠâ
Mr. Nwosu nodded.
âHe used your ignorance against both of you.â
Chioma collapsed into a chair.
Donald had not only destroyed her marriage.
He had manipulated her entire past.
Then her phone rang.
A message from an unknown number.
EMEKA IS NOT YOUR BROTHER.
Chioma stared.
Another message arrived.
YOUR MOTHER LIED AGAIN.
Then a photograph appeared.
It showed Chioma's father holding a newborn baby.
Beside him stood a woman.
The woman was not Emeka's mother.
It was someone else.
Someone Chioma knew.
She turned toward Mr. Nwosu.
âWho is that woman?â
He looked at the photograph.
His face became terrified.
âThatâŠâ
May you like
He could barely speak.
âThat woman is Donald's mother.â
