Chapter 8 - THE WRONG CHILDSecurity sealed the hospital.

Every door locked.
Every elevator stopped.
But Lily was nowhere.
I was barely breathing.
Alexander grabbed my shoulder.
“We'll find her.”
“She was beside me.”
“I know.”
“No. You don't understand.”
I could see it again.
Lily holding my hand.
The nurse opening the room.
Someone had distracted me for three seconds.
Three seconds.
The kidnappers had planned every movement.
Then Marcus spoke.
“Don't panic.”
I turned on him.
“My daughter is missing!”
“Exactly.”
He looked at the hospital cameras.
“If they wanted to hurt her, they wouldn't have called.”
“They said—”
“They wanted you to believe they had her.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Marcus pointed at the security monitor.
“Look.”
A hallway camera showed a little girl in a yellow dress.
She was being led by a nurse.
But it wasn't Lily.
The child was smaller.
Dark hair.
Yellow dress.
I recognized her immediately.
Nora.
The little girl from the vault drawing.
“They took Nora,” Marcus said.
Alexander's face went white.
The kidnappers had deliberately created confusion.
They wanted us to believe they had my daughter because they needed Alexander to chase the wrong target.
Marcus followed the camera trail.
The nurse carrying Nora entered the parking garage.
We ran.
A black van was waiting.
But by the time we reached it, it was empty.
Inside, we found a child's shoe.
A yellow ribbon.
And an envelope.
Alexander opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Amelia.
On the back:
ONE FAMILY MUST DISAPPEAR FOR THE OTHER TO SURVIVE.
Below it was an address.
An old estate outside the city.
Victor looked at it.
“I know this place.”
“Whose house?”
He didn't answer.
Marcus did.
“Edward Whitmore's.”
Alexander's dead father's estate.
The place had been sealed for seven years.
We drove there.
The house stood behind iron gates covered with ivy.
Inside, we found no people.
But the basement was active.
Computers.
Files.
Medical supplies.
A child’s bedroom.
A photograph of Amelia holding a newborn baby.
And on the desk sat a sealed letter.
Alexander opened it.
His father had written it years earlier.
The letter contained a horrifying confession.
Edward had discovered that Victor and Cynthia were moving company assets illegally.
He intended to expose them.
But before he could, he suffered what the family called a fatal heart attack.
The letter suggested it wasn't natural.
At the bottom was one sentence:
If you're reading this, Victor already knows.
Then Lily walked out from behind a doorway.
“Mom.”
I ran to her.
She was unharmed.
But she was holding something.
A red velvet box.
Inside was a key.
She said:
“A lady gave me this.”
“What lady?”
“Amelia.”
Alexander's eyes filled with tears.
“Did you see her?”
Lily nodded.
“She was here.”
Then she whispered:
“She told me Daddy can't trust the police.”
Outside, sirens began approaching.
Marcus checked the cameras.
His face went pale.
“It's not the police.”
“Who is it?”
May you like
He looked at Alexander.
“Victor.”
