Chapter 14 - THE RECORDINGThe emergency generators started after thirty seconds.

But Richard had disabled the elevators.
The hotel was sealed.
We moved toward my old family records room.
My mother had died several years earlier.
I had emptied most of her belongings.
But one thing remained.
An old cedar music box.
Lily had seen it in my house.
She said it had a hidden compartment.
We opened it.
Inside was a microcassette.
Thirty years old.
Edward found an adapter.
The recording began with static.
Then my mother's voice.
She was crying.
“I saw him.”
A man's voice answered.
“Who?”
“Richard.”
She described the night Victor was killed.
Richard had confronted the real Victor.
They argued about the Whitmore accounts.
Then came a loud noise.
A gunshot.
Another voice screamed.
My mother whispered:
“He killed him.”
Then Richard said:
“From tonight, I am Victor Whitmore.”
The recording continued.
But there was one more voice.
A young woman.
Amelia's mother.
She said:
“My daughter is in the nursery.”
Richard replied:
“Then she'll grow up believing the wrong man is her uncle.”
The recording ended.
Edward stood in silence.
“This proves everything.”
“No,” Amelia said.
“Not everything.”
She pointed to a final timestamp.
The recording contained a second segment.
We played it.
It revealed something devastating.
Richard had not acted alone.
Someone had helped him.
The voice was familiar.
Alexander looked sick.
The family attorney.
But then came a second voice.
Cynthia.
She was only eighteen at the time.
She had known the truth from the beginning.
She had not joined the scheme recently.
She had inherited it.
Alexander sat down.
“Cynthia knew.”
Amelia nodded.
“She helped Richard build the trust.”
“And Vanessa?”
“Vanessa was brought in later.”
“The doctor?”
“Blackmailed.”
“Marcus?”
“Protected me.”
The pieces finally connected.
But one piece remained.
Where was Richard?
A message appeared on the security monitor.
BALLROOM.
We ran.
Richard stood beneath the chandelier.
He was holding a gun.
Cynthia stood beside him.
Vanessa was on the floor.
The attorney was bleeding.
Alexander stepped forward.
“Let them go.”
Richard smiled.
“You still think you're negotiating.”
Edward stepped beside his son.
Richard stared at him.
“You should have stayed dead.”
Edward replied:
“You should have died when Victor caught you.”
Richard laughed.
Then Cynthia turned toward him.
“Where is my money?”
Richard looked at her.
“You were never getting the company.”
Her expression collapsed.
“You promised me.”
“I promised you a role.”
Cynthia realized the truth.
She had been disposable.
So had Vanessa.
So had the doctor.
Everyone had been a piece.
Richard raised his gun.
Then Lily stepped from behind me.
“Stop.”
Every adult froze.
Richard looked at her.
“Come here.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“You don't understand what you've seen.”
Lily shook her head.
“I do.”
She pointed toward the chandelier.
“There’s another camera.”
Richard's smile disappeared.
I looked up.
Lily was right.
A hidden camera had been recording everything.
The entire confrontation.
Including his confession.
Richard looked toward the ceiling.
Then he fired.
The chandelier exploded.
The room went dark.
Gunfire erupted.
People screamed.
When the lights came back, Richard was gone.
Cynthia was kneeling on the floor.
Alexander looked around.
“Where's Lily?”
My heart stopped.
May you like
Again.
She was gone.
