Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO DISAPPEAREDMarcus did not shoot.

He closed the door.
Then lowered the weapon.
“I’m not your enemy.”
Alexander laughed bitterly.
“You kidnapped my wife.”
“I kept her alive.”
“You erased her.”
“I kept her hidden.”
“From whom?”
Marcus looked at the camera.
“From people who wanted her dead.”
I stepped between him and Lily.
“Then why didn’t you tell Alexander?”
“Because I didn't know who inside the family was working for Victor.”
Alexander stared at him.
“You?”
Marcus shook his head.
“Not me.”
“Cynthia?”
“No.”
“Vanessa?”
“No.”
Marcus hesitated.
“It goes higher.”
“Higher than my uncle?”
Marcus looked directly at him.
“Your father.”
Alexander froze.
His father, Edward Whitmore, had been dead for seven years.
“You’re saying my father was involved?”
“I’m saying the scheme started before you took control.”
Marcus explained.
Edward had created a secret financial network using Whitmore Holdings.
Victor inherited part of it.
Cynthia discovered the accounts.
Instead of exposing them, she joined the operation.
Vanessa became useful because she could marry Alexander and eventually claim control through the false-child trust.
But Amelia had found everything.
“She was supposed to leave the country,” Marcus said.
“She refused.”
“Why?”
“Because she was pregnant.”
Alexander looked down.
“Nora.”
Marcus nodded.
“Amelia believed your daughter would be safe if you knew about her.”
“But you didn't tell me.”
“I tried.”
He pulled a phone from his pocket.
On it were dozens of unanswered messages.
All addressed to Alexander.
Every one had failed.
“The family intercepted them.”
Alexander stared.
“Who?”
Marcus looked toward me.
“No. Not the person you think.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Who then?”
Marcus said:
“Your personal attorney.”
Alexander's eyes widened.
The same attorney who had announced the unborn-child trust.
The same attorney who had stood in the ballroom.
The same attorney who knew everything.
Before we could process it, Marcus's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
Then he answered.
A man's voice came through.
“You found the vault.”
Marcus said nothing.
The caller continued.
“Then you also found the child.”
Marcus looked at Lily.
Alexander moved instantly.
“What child?”
A pause.
Then:
“Nora.”
The line went dead.
Marcus swore.
“They know.”
“Where is Amelia?” Alexander demanded.
Marcus pointed upward.
“She was moved two days ago.”
“Where?”
“Whitmore Medical Foundation.”
Alexander grabbed his coat.
“Then we go there.”
Marcus stopped him.
“You don't understand.”
“What?”
“It's not a hospital.”
May you like
He looked at the surveillance camera.
“It's a prison.”
