Chapter 15 - “CLAIRE!”My scream echoed through Room Three.

The archive was chaos.

Boxes overturned.

Monitors blinking.

Dust floating through red emergency light.

Lily was beside Sarah.

Michael had vanished too.

My father was gone.

Vanessa was nowhere.

I ran toward the corridor.

At the end of it, a steel door swung slowly.

I opened it.

Nothing.

Then I noticed blood on the floor.

A trail.

Not much.

Enough.

I followed it.

The passage ended at another hidden room.

Inside was a chair.

A table.

One camera.

And Claire.

She was sitting in the chair.

Unconscious.

Vanessa stood behind her.

Blood covered her arm.

“Don't move.”

I froze.

“Vanessa.”

“She isn't dead.”

“Why are you holding her?”

“I saved her.”

“From whom?”

Vanessa looked toward the camera.

“From you.”

I stopped.

“What?”

She pointed at the screen.

My father appeared.

But this time he wasn't speaking.

Another person sat beside him.

An old woman.

I didn't recognize her.

Then Claire woke.

She looked at Vanessa.

“You weren't supposed to bring him here.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“He needed to know.”

I stared.

“Know what?”

Claire looked at me.

“The truth.”

I felt exhausted.

“I've had enough truths.”

Claire took a breath.

“My mother was never the mastermind.”

“My father?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Claire looked toward the old woman on the screen.

“My mother.”

I stared at the monitor.

The old woman smiled.

“My mother died when I was a child.”

Claire nodded.

“She disappeared.”

“But…”

“She built the network before vanishing.”

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why did she help?”

“She was part of the family.”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“She was the first architect of Room Three.”

I felt sick.

“Why?”

“Protection.”

“For what?”

“For one thing.”

She looked at Lily.

“Control.”

The old woman on the screen spoke.

“My dear Claire.”

Claire stood.

“You're dead.”

“Not yet.”

“Why Lily?”

“Because children are unpredictable.”

The old woman looked directly into the camera.

“And unpredictable things are dangerous.”

I didn't understand.

Claire explained.

“My mother discovered that the Mercer family had been manipulating elections, contracts, courts, companies.”

She swallowed.

“They created Room Three to keep proof.”

“But why preserve proof?”

“Because proof is power.”

My father entered the room.

He had been listening.

“The archive was never meant to be destroyed.”

He looked at me.

“It was meant to be inherited.”

I understood.

The family wanted me to become the next keeper.

Not their servant.

Their owner.

The person who controlled every secret.

My father continued:

“You were chosen because you were the only one who still believed this family was decent.”

I shook my head.

“You destroyed my life.”

“I gave you a life.”

“You killed my mother.”

“Yes.”

“You imprisoned my wife.”

“Yes.”

“You threatened my daughter.”

He looked at Lily.

“We never intended to hurt her.”

I almost laughed.

“You kidnapped her.”

“To bring you here.”

I stepped closer.

“Then why tell me all this?”

My father smiled.

“Because Room Three belongs to you now.”

He pressed a button.

Every monitor turned toward me.

A message appeared.

SUCCESSION COMPLETE.

I stared.

“No.”

My father smiled.

“You activated the archive.”

I looked at the screen.

My fingerprint had been recorded.

My voice.

My face.

My identity.

The system recognized me.

All access privileges changed.

ADMINISTRATOR: DANIEL MERCER

I stepped back.

“I don't want this.”

“You already have it.”

Sarah raised her weapon.

“Then destroy it.”

I looked at the servers.

Thousands of secrets.

Thousands of lives.

Evidence of crimes spanning generations.

Destroying it would bury the truth forever.

Keeping it would make me the person my family wanted.

I remembered my mother's voice.

Don't trust the person who saves you.

I looked at Vanessa.

She lowered her head.

Then I understood.

She hadn't been protecting Claire from my father.

She had been protecting Claire from the archive.

From the moment Claire found Room One, she knew that anyone who controlled the archive could control everyone.

Including me.

Vanessa had tried to destroy the system.

That was why she had stayed in our house.

That was why she built the wall.

That was why she kept Lily safe.

I looked at Claire.

“Did you know?”

She nodded.

“I knew part of it.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid you'd become him.”

I looked at the servers.

Then at Lily.

My daughter.

The only person in the room who had never chosen this.

I walked toward the control panel.

My father smiled.

“You'll understand eventually.”

I typed.

DELETE ADMINISTRATOR

The system rejected it.

I typed again.

OVERRIDE

Rejected.

My father's smile widened.

“You can't destroy Room Three.”

I looked at Lily.

She walked toward me.

“Dad.”

“What?”

She touched the keyboard.

Her finger landed on one key.

A forgotten symbol.

My mother had shown it to me once.

Six years old.

A red door.

A secret code.

I typed the symbol.

The archive unlocked.

Then every file copied itself to a dozen external servers.

Sarah stared.

“What did you do?”

I looked at my father.

“I made sure you couldn't bury it.”

Across the screens, upload bars began moving.

25%.

42%.

68%.

91%.

My father's face changed.

“No.”

100%.

The archive was gone from the Mercer system.

But the evidence now existed everywhere.

Phones buzzed.

Police radios crackled.

News alerts began appearing.

My father's empire was collapsing in real time.

He raised his gun.

Michael stepped between us.

A shot rang out.

My father fell.

Sarah rushed forward.

Vanessa pulled Claire away.

Lily clung to me.

And for the first time in eighteen months, I held my wife with nothing between us.

No wall.

No secrets.

No hidden room.

At least, that's what I thought.

Later that morning, we left the underground archive.

Police surrounded the estate.

My father was arrested.

Michael was taken to the hospital.

Vanessa gave a full statement.

Claire stayed with Lily.

I thought it was finally over.

Until Lily tugged my sleeve.

“Dad.”

I looked down.

“What?”

She pointed toward the old mansion.

“There is another wall.”

My blood ran cold.

“Where?”

She pointed to the second floor.

“In your bedroom.”

I stared at the house.

“No.”

Lily nodded.

“I heard knocking.”

Behind us, Claire whispered:

“Daniel…”

I turned.

She was pale.

“You never told me something.”

“What?”

She looked toward the mansion.

“You never told me your bedroom was there before you were born.”

A faint sound came from the house.

THUD.

Another.

THUD.

Then three slow knocks.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Lily squeezed my hand.

A voice whispered from somewhere inside the walls.

Not Claire.

Not my father.

Not Michael.

A woman's voice.

My mother's voice.

“Daniel…”

I couldn't breathe.

May you like

“Open the wall.”

THE END
