Chapter 14 - The chapel exploded into movement. My father reached for his gun.

Sarah fired first.

He dove behind a pillar.

Michael pulled Claire and Lily behind the altar.

Vanessa slammed the chapel doors shut.

“There's another way out!”

We ran.

The gunfire followed us.

We entered the hidden passage beneath the altar.

Sarah locked the steel gate behind us.

My father shouted from the other side.

“You can't hide in my house!”

I stopped.

“My house.”

His voice answered:

“Everything is mine.”

Then silence.

We ran deeper underground.

The passage opened into an enormous underground chamber.

Shelves covered every wall.

Thousands of files.

Computers.

Hard drives.

Boxes.

Photographs.

Names.

It was the real Room Three.

The archive wasn't a room.

It was a world beneath the house.

Claire stared.

“This is what I was looking for.”

Michael looked at the servers.

“Not just records.”

He opened one.

“Financial transfers.”

Sarah scanned another.

“Government contracts.”

Another.

“Police.”

Another.

“Judges.”

I stared.

The family had spent decades building a hidden network.

But there was something unexpected.

A folder labeled:

DANIEL MERCER.

I opened it.

Inside were records from my entire life.

School.

College.

Jobs.

Relationships.

Every move.

Every mistake.

Every friend.

Every bank account.

Every conversation they'd recorded.

They had been watching me since childhood.

At the bottom was one final document.

SUCCESSION AGREEMENT

My name was already signed.

I stared.

“I never signed this.”

Claire came beside me.

“That isn't your signature.”

I recognized the trick.

The signature had been copied from an old passport application.

A digital forgery.

My father had used my identity to move assets.

I looked at Sarah.

“This is proof.”

“It's evidence.”

Then we heard footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Coming down the corridor.

My father entered.

He was holding a gun.

No one spoke.

He looked at the servers.

“You weren't supposed to find this.”

I stood between him and Lily.

“It's over.”

He smiled.

“No.”

“You've been exposed.”

“By whom?”

“The police.”

He laughed.

“You think the police are outside waiting to arrest me?”

Sarah looked at him.

“They are.”

He shook his head.

“I paid for their careers.”

Sarah's expression hardened.

“We'll see.”

My father turned toward Michael.

“You always were weak.”

Michael raised his gun.

“You killed our mother.”

“I protected the family.”

“You murdered her.”

“She betrayed us.”

Claire stepped forward.

“She was going to expose Room Three.”

“Yes.”

“And you killed her.”

“I did what I had to do.”

My father's voice was calm.

That made it worse.

I looked at him.

“You wanted Lily's memory.”

“Yes.”

“Because she remembers the ledger.”

“Yes.”

“You don't need her anymore.”

He nodded.

“Correct.”

I frowned.

“Then why bring her here?”

He smiled.

“Because she isn't the only one who remembers.”

He looked at me.

“You do.”

I felt a chill.

“What?”

“You were six when your mother died.”

I stared.

“I barely remember it.”

“That is what we wanted.”

Claire shook her head.

“Your father used drugs.”

I looked at her.

“He drugged you.”

My heart pounded.

“He erased the memory.”

Michael stepped forward.

“Except it didn't work.”

A memory flashed.

A red door.

A gun.

My mother crying.

My father's hand on my shoulder.

A voice saying:

“Don't look.”

I staggered.

I remembered.

I remembered the night my mother died.

I remembered Room Three.

I remembered my father holding the gun.

And I remembered something else.

A man standing behind him.

Elias.

My grandfather.

Watching.

I looked at my father.

“You didn't kill her alone.”

He said nothing.

“You both did.”

His face changed.

“Careful.”

“No.”

The memory came faster.

My mother had hidden the ledger.

She had given the key to me.

A six-year-old boy.

She had whispered:

“Hide it where nobody can find it.”

I looked at Lily.

She was crying.

“Dad?”

I suddenly understood.

The key hadn't been meant for her.

It had been meant for me.

The thing Lily inherited wasn't the memory itself.

It was the ability to unlock mine.

I turned toward the oldest server.

A red light blinked.

I entered the code without knowing why.

My birthday.

The system unlocked.

Files appeared.

One final file.

MOTHER'S TESTIMONY.

I clicked it.

My mother's voice filled the room.

“Daniel, if you remember this…”

She paused.

“…don't trust the person who saved you.”

I looked at Michael.

Vanessa.

Claire.

Sarah.

My heart stopped.

Then my mother continued.

“The person who saves you is the person who started this.”

The lights went out.

A single gunshot echoed.

May you like

When the emergency lights came on…

Claire was gone.
