Chapter 11 - Michael wasn't dead. The bullet had grazed his side.

Sarah arrived minutes later and stopped the bleeding.

We barricaded the room.

Claire finally told us the truth.

Not all of it.

But enough.

Years ago, my grandfather had created a private system for hiding money, people, documents, and identities.

Room One was the archive.

Room Two was the holding facility.

Room Three was different.

Room Three contained the original records.

The names of people who had been bribed.

Blackmailed.

Threatened.

Killed.

Not officially.

Never officially.

My father inherited the system.

Michael discovered it as a teenager.

Instead of exposing it, he tried to escape.

That was when they made him disappear.

The man buried in his coffin was a stranger.

Michael lived under another identity.

Claire discovered the truth after she married me.

She found Room One while searching for old property documents.

She found photographs.

Names.

And one file containing Lily's birth records.

“Why Lily?” I asked.

Claire looked at me.

“Because someone predicted she would become important.”

“That's insane.”

“I know.”

“Who predicted it?”

Claire hesitated.

“Your grandfather.”

I looked at Lily.

A six-year-old child.

None of this made sense.

Claire continued.

“When Lily was born, your father insisted on seeing her records.”

“Why?”

“He wanted to know her blood type.”

“That’s not unusual.”

“He wasn't checking blood type.”

“What then?”

“Genetic markers.”

I frowned.

Claire pulled out a document.

A list of rare hereditary markers.

One was highlighted.

“Lily has a marker your family has carried for generations.”

“And?”

“It's associated with a neurological trait that lets some people retain unusually detailed visual memories.”

I stared at her.

“You're saying Lily remembers things perfectly?”

“Not everything.”

“But certain images.”

“Yes.”

Claire swallowed.

“When she was three, she described a room she'd never seen.”

“What room?”

“Room Three.”

The room became silent.

Lily looked down.

“I remember the red door.”

My blood ran cold.

“What red door?”

Lily pointed toward the tunnel.

“Mom showed me.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“I never wanted her involved.”

“But she knows.”

“Yes.”

Then the lights went out.

Again.

Sarah immediately raised her weapon.

A voice came through the speakers.

My father's.

“You brought them all together.”

I looked at the ceiling.

“Where are you?”

“Closer than you think.”

The lights came back.

On the monitor, Vanessa appeared.

She was standing in an empty office.

Blood stained her sleeve.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel.”

I stepped closer.

“Vanessa.”

“I need you to listen carefully.”

My father's voice interrupted.

“She's lying.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

She looked terrified.

“I was supposed to help them remove Claire.”

Claire stiffened.

“What?”

“I couldn't do it.”

Vanessa began crying.

“They threatened Lily.”

My stomach dropped.

“So you helped them?”

“I delayed it.”

“How?”

“I told them Claire had left the country.”

Claire stared at her.

Vanessa continued.

“I hid her in the house.”

For eighteen months, Vanessa had been secretly protecting Claire.

Not imprisoning her.

Protecting her.

“I built the wall,” Vanessa whispered.

I stared.

“You built it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father was searching every room.”

Vanessa looked toward the camera.

“He knew Claire was alive.”

“Then why did you fight Lily?”

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Because Lily found the wall.”

She looked down.

“And because if your father realized she'd heard Claire…”

Her voice broke.

“He would kill her.”

The screen went black.

Then a new message appeared.

COME TO THE CHAPEL. ALONE.

Claire grabbed my hand.

“No.”

I looked at the screen.

A second message appeared.

BRING LILY.

A third.

OR MICHAEL DIES.

Michael opened his eyes.

“Don't.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

He whispered:

“Because Father isn't giving you a choice.”

Claire looked toward the tunnel.

“There is always a choice.”

Michael shook his head.

“Not this time.”

Then Lily quietly said:

“Dad?”

“What?”

May you like

She pointed behind us.

“I think someone is already in the room.”
