Chapter 8 - The Father Who Was Supposed to Be DeadI read the letter three times.

The words never changed.

Your father is alive.

Daniel called the number connected to the old family security system.

No answer.

Vanessa was sitting against the wall, shaking.

Noah was asleep upstairs.

I couldn't sleep.

I couldn't think.

My father.

Alive.

For years I had attended his funeral.

I had watched the coffin lowered into the ground.

I had identified his belongings.

Or thought I had.

I remembered the day clearly.

Rain.

Black suit.

Gabriel standing beside me.

Vanessa wasn't there.

Lily was holding my hand.

She kept telling me to breathe.

Now every memory looked different.

We went to the cemetery.

The grave was empty.

Not recently opened.

Never occupied.

The cemetery records listed a transfer of remains three days after the funeral.

The body had been moved to another location.

No record of where.

Daniel stared at the paperwork.

“Someone falsified this.”

“Who had authority?”

“Gabriel.”

My phone rang.

A blocked number.

I answered.

My father's voice came through.

“Hello, son.”

I nearly dropped the phone.

“Dad?”

A pause.

“You found Lily's files.”

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere you can no longer reach.”

“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”

“It was necessary.”

“You let me bury an empty coffin.”

“You were safer believing I was gone.”

“Lily is dead.”

Silence.

“You knew.”

“I warned her.”

“You killed her.”

“No.”

His voice hardened.

“She discovered something she didn't understand.”

“You murdered my wife.”

“No.”

“Then why did you disappear?”

“Because if I stayed, they would have killed both of you.”

“Who?”

My father said one name.

“Gabriel.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Gabriel works for you.”

“He used to.”

“Then who does he work for?”

My father didn't answer.

“Dad.”

“We have very little time.”

“What do you mean?”

“They know you found the USB.”

I looked toward the house.

“They've already taken Noah twice.”

A pause.

“Then listen carefully.”

My father gave me an address.

An abandoned hotel outside the city.

“Come alone.”

“No.”

“If you bring police, I disappear.”

“You're already dead.”

“Not legally.”

The call ended.

Daniel wanted to come.

I refused.

Instead, Vanessa followed me without permission.

When I reached the hotel, I found my father waiting in the lobby.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

I couldn't speak.

He looked at me.

“You look like your mother.”

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted to hug him.

I did neither.

“Why did Lily die?”

He looked away.

“She found the Black Ledger.”

“What is it?”

“A list of people.”

“Who?”

“People who paid Gabriel.”

“For what?”

My father finally looked at me.

“For killing people.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“You ran a criminal organization.”

“No.”

“Then what was the company?”

“A front.”

“For what?”

“To move evidence out of dangerous hands.”

I stared.

He continued.

“Your grandfather built a network that exposed corrupt officials and businessmen.”

“That sounds insane.”

“It is.”

“Then why were you involved?”

“Because leaving the system was impossible.”

“And Lily?”

“She discovered it.”

“And Vanessa?”

“An asset.”

I turned.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

My father looked at her.

“You were never supposed to marry Ethan.”

Vanessa started crying.

“I know.”

My father looked at me.

“Your wife was killed because she found a name on the Black Ledger.”

“Whose?”

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Mine.”

I stared.

“What?”

“I wasn't the person controlling everything.”

“Who was?”

He stepped closer.

“You.”

I laughed.

“You're insane.”

“No.”

He pointed at the photograph in my hand.

“That photograph was taken six months before Lily died.”

I looked at it.

My father wasn't beside Gabriel.

He was beside me.

My younger self.

But I had no memory of the meeting.

May you like

My father whispered:

“You have been part of this longer than you know.”
