Chapter 10 - Someone Was Living in the WallsWe returned to the mansion.

The police surrounded it.

The search teams found nothing.

No Noah.

No intruder.

No hidden room.

Then I remembered Lily's warning.

The only place you'd never search.

Her grave.

We went to the cemetery.

A fresh patch of soil had been disturbed.

Under it was a metal case.

Inside was the Black Ledger.

It wasn't a book.

It was a thin encrypted drive.

And beneath it was a photograph.

Lily.

Holding Noah.

Taken hours before her death.

On the back she had written:

HE IS NOT YOUR SON BY BLOOD.

My heart stopped.

Vanessa stared at me.

“What does that mean?”

I couldn't answer.

Noah was five.

Lily had carried him herself.

At least, everyone said she had.

I opened the ledger.

The encryption required a password.

A voice recording started automatically.

Lily.

“If you're hearing this, Ethan, you've reached the end.”

Her breathing was shaky.

“The truth about Noah was never meant to hurt you.”

I closed my eyes.

“He is your son.”

Relief crashed through me.

Then:

“But Vanessa is not the woman you think she is.”

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face had gone pale.

“She was sent to watch you.”

The recording ended.

Vanessa whispered:

“I can explain.”

I turned toward her.

“You've been watching me?”

“At first.”

“For whom?”

“Gabriel.”

“Then who is inside my house?”

She shook her head.

“Not Gabriel.”

I pulled up the security footage.

The five missing minutes.

Again.

This time I slowed the footage.

A shadow appeared behind Noah's bedroom door.

A person entering.

Not from the hallway.

From the wall.

I froze.

The wall.

I remembered the tunnel.

The house had hidden passages.

Someone had been living inside them.

We tore apart the nursery.

Behind the wardrobe was a concealed panel.

Inside:

Blankets.

Food.

A flashlight.

A second monitor.

And photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Me sleeping.

Lily sleeping.

Noah playing.

Vanessa cooking.

Someone had been watching us for months.

Daniel picked up one photograph.

It showed Vanessa standing beside a stranger.

I recognized him.

Gabriel's assistant.

But the photograph had been taken inside our house.

Six months after Lily's death.

That was impossible.

We searched the hidden room further.

Then we found a microphone connected to the nursery.

Someone had been listening to Noah.

A tiny recording device played automatically.

Noah's voice.

“Mommy said Daddy mustn't trust Uncle Gabriel.”

A man's voice answered.

“Who told you that?”

“Mommy.”

“When?”

“Before she died.”

“What else?”

Noah whispered:

“She said Uncle Gabriel wasn't alone.”

The man's voice asked:

“Who was with him?”

Noah answered.

“Grandpa.”

I looked at Daniel.

“That's impossible.”

But then the recording continued.

“No.”

Noah's voice trembled.

“It wasn't Grandpa.”

“Who was it?”

Noah said one name.

“Daddy.”

I stepped backward.

My own voice appeared on the recording.

“Where's the ledger, Lily?”

Then a scream.

Then silence.

I couldn't breathe.

Daniel stared at me.

“Ethan…”

I shook my head.

“That isn't me.”

But the voice was mine.

Every word.

Every breath.

May you like

And the recording ended with Lily whispering:

“I knew he'd come back.”
