Chapter 15 - Mommy Was Still WaitingNobody moved.

Not Rebecca.

Not Harper.

Not Gabriel.

Not even me.

The woman on the screen was Lily.

My wife.

The woman I had buried.

The woman whose photograph I had kissed on anniversaries.

The woman whose son cried for her every night.

Alive.

“Lily?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I'm sorry.”

I couldn't speak.

Noah stepped forward.

“Mommy?”

Lily covered her mouth.

Then she cried.

Real tears.

Not an actor's tears.

Not a recording.

My son knew the voice.

He ran toward the screen.

“Mommy!”

I caught him.

“Wait.”

Lily looked at him.

“Noah.”

He sobbed.

“You went away.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

She cried harder.

“Because I had to keep you safe.”

I stared at the screen.

“Where are you?”

She gave me an address.

The same abandoned research facility where my father had once stored company records.

I took Noah with me.

Rebecca and Harper followed.

Gabriel was alive but unconscious.

At the facility, every light was on.

The main door opened automatically.

Inside was a control room.

Monitors covered the walls.

Lily stood in the center.

Alive.

Thin.

Tired.

But alive.

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Then I walked toward her.

She whispered:

“Ethan.”

I stopped inches away.

“Why?”

She lowered her head.

“Because they were going to kill you.”

“So you faked your death?”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

“You let Noah believe his mother was gone.”

“I thought it would protect him.”

“He cried for you every night.”

She closed her eyes.

“I know.”

I was angry.

Furious.

Broken.

But then Noah pushed past me.

He ran into her arms.

“Mommy!”

Lily fell to her knees.

She held him.

“I missed you.”

Noah cried into her shoulder.

“I kept Mommy Bear.”

“I know.”

He held up the teddy bear.

“The thing inside helped Daddy find you.”

Lily looked at me.

“You found the USB.”

“Yes.”

She smiled through tears.

“Then it worked.”

I looked around.

“What is this?”

“The place where I kept the evidence.”

She explained everything.

The car crash had been staged.

The driver had been drugged, then the vehicle was destroyed remotely.

Lily had escaped before the crash.

She had used the USB and Black Ledger to expose the network.

My father's disappearance had been part of the operation.

Gabriel had believed Lily dead.

Evan had believed her dead.

Rebecca had believed her dead.

Everyone had been manipulated.

Except Lily.

But there was one final truth.

“Who ordered all of this?” I asked.

Lily walked to a monitor.

She opened a file.

A name appeared.

WILLIAM COLE.

My grandfather.

Dead for twenty years.

I stared.

“What?”

Lily nodded.

“He created the network.”

My family had inherited it.

Generation after generation.

Money.

Secrets.

Blackmail.

Protection.

Violence.

And my father had tried to escape it.

Lily had tried to expose it.

My grandfather had built it.

The final file contained names, accounts, recordings and photographs spanning thirty years.

Enough to destroy powerful people.

Enough to explain every lie.

Lily turned toward me.

“I didn't bring you here to continue it.”

“Then why?”

“Because I want it to end.”

She handed the drive to Detective Harper.

“Everything is here.”

He stared at it.

“This could take down half the people in the files.”

Lily nodded.

“That was the point.”

Rebecca began crying.

“I helped them.”

Lily walked toward her.

“You also saved Noah.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“After everything I did?”

“You were afraid.”

“So were you.”

Lily smiled faintly.

“Yes.”

Then Noah tugged on my sleeve.

“Daddy?”

“What?”

“Can we go home?”

I looked at him.

Then at Lily.

For two years, home had been a place full of ghosts.

Now, for the first time, it felt like home again.

We left the facility before sunrise.

The sky was turning pale.

Noah fell asleep in the back seat.

His teddy bear was tucked under his arm.

Lily sat beside him.

I drove.

For several miles, nobody spoke.

Then Lily reached across the console and took my hand.

I looked at her.

“There's still one problem.”

“What?”

She turned toward me.

“The person who helped me fake my death…”

I frowned.

“Who?”

She looked in the rearview mirror.

At Noah.

Then back at me.

“He's been watching us from the beginning.”

My stomach tightened.

“You mean Gabriel?”

“No.”

“Evan?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Lily's face went pale.

“The man who sent me the first warning.”

“Who was he?”

She whispered a name.

A name I had never heard.

But Noah suddenly opened his eyes.

He looked straight at me.

And said:

“Daddy…”

I glanced at him in the mirror.

“He knows.”

“Who?”

Noah pointed toward the road behind us.

A black SUV followed silently in the distance.

The same model from the night Lily died.

The same black SUV.

The same license plate.

And as the sun rose behind us, the driver's window rolled down.

A man's face appeared.

My father's face.

But my father was dead.

Again.

The phone on the dashboard began ringing.

Lily looked at me.

“Don't answer.”

I did anyway.

A man's voice whispered through the speaker.

“Hello, Ethan.”

I gripped the steering wheel.

“Who are you?”

The voice laughed.

Then said:

“You still think you found your wife.”

The call ended.

Noah began crying.

Lily stared through the rear window.

And the black SUV accelerated.

For the first time, I understood what the teddy bear had really carried.

Not the end of a mystery.

The beginning of one.

Because Lily had survived the night she was supposed to die.

My father had survived his funeral.

Evan had disappeared.

Gabriel was alive.

And now someone wearing my father's face was following my family down the highway.

I stepped harder on the accelerator.

Behind us, the SUV did the same.

Noah reached for Lily's hand.

She held it tightly.

And somewhere inside the teddy bear, hidden beneath the torn seam, something clicked.

A second USB.

One we had never found.

One Lily had never mentioned.

The dashboard screen suddenly turned black.

Then white letters appeared.

FILE 2 OF 2

PLAY?

Underneath it was one final line.

RECORDED AFTER LILY'S DEATH.

I looked at Lily.

She looked at me.

Neither of us touched the screen.

Because we both knew the same thing.

Whatever was on that second recording had been waiting for us all along.

And whoever made it knew exactly when we would finally come looking.

The screen began counting down.

And Noah whispered:

“Daddy…”

7

“It's the man from Mommy's window.”

I looked at the mirror.

The black SUV was almost beside us.

Lily grabbed my arm.

4

“Ethan…”

The other driver's window lowered.

A gun appeared.

The screen lit up.

And a man's voice said:

“Now you finally remember me.”
