Chapter 9 - Michael took Emma back to a secure hotel.Nobody in the family knew where they were.

Except Detective Brooks.

And Daniel.

The room felt strangely small.

Emma sat on the bed, coloring.

Michael stood by the window.

His entire understanding of the past had collapsed in less than an hour.

Sarah wasn't Emma's biological mother.

Rebecca was.

Ashley knew.

Richard knew.

His sister knew.

How many others?

He called Rebecca.

She answered on the first ring.

“Michael.”

“Did you give birth to Emma?”

Silence.

Then a broken whisper.

“Yes.”

Michael closed his eyes.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Sarah begged me not to.”

“Why?”

“Because Emma was in danger.”

“From Ashley?”

“From everyone.”

Michael looked toward Emma.

“How did Sarah raise her?”

Rebecca took a breath.

“I gave birth to Emma when I was nineteen.”

Michael frowned.

“Then what happened?”

“I had no money. No family. I was in a violent situation.”

“Who?”

Rebecca didn't answer.

“Who was Emma's father?”

Silence.

Michael's voice hardened.

“Tell me.”

Rebecca whispered:

“Richard.”

Michael looked toward the ceiling.

Of course.

Richard's interest in Emma.

His access to Sarah.

His connection to the trust.

Everything suddenly had another shape.

“You were with Richard?”

“Yes.”

“And Sarah knew?”

“She found out.”

“How?”

“She helped me escape.”

Michael sat down.

“Why did you marry Sarah?”

“I loved her.”

Rebecca began crying.

“I didn't want Emma taken from us.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Richard knew you were raising her.”

Michael's breathing slowed.

“What did he want?”

“Access.”

“To Emma?”

“To the trust.”

Rebecca explained the history.

When Emma was born, Richard discovered that his family's estate had a dormant inheritance tied to his descendants.

Emma's existence created a legal path to those assets.

But Richard could not access them while Rebecca retained custody.

Sarah helped Rebecca disappear.

Michael had not known any of this.

He had believed the trust was simply something Sarah had arranged for Emma's future.

It was something much more complicated.

Then Ashley entered the picture.

Rebecca's voice dropped.

“Ashley was hired to get close to you.”

“By Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Sarah trust her?”

“She didn't.”

“That's what makes no sense.”

Rebecca was silent.

Finally she said:

“Ashley was originally supposed to help Sarah.”

Michael frowned.

“What happened?”

“She switched sides.”

The words sat heavily in the room.

Ashley had started as an informant.

Then she saw how vulnerable Michael's family was.

And greed changed the arrangement.

“She wanted the money for herself,” Rebecca said.

“Richard wanted Emma.”

“And Ashley wanted the trust.”

Michael looked at Emma.

“What did Emma actually witness the night Sarah died?”

Rebecca hesitated.

“She saw the confrontation.”

“With Richard?”

“Yes.”

“And Sarah?”

“Sarah was trying to protect Emma.”

Michael remembered Emma's description.

The black coat.

The silver ring.

Sarah crying.

Richard grabbing her.

Then Ashley.

There was one missing piece.

“Where were you?”

Rebecca answered:

“In the car.”

Michael frowned.

“Why didn't you help?”

“I tried.”

“And?”

“I was hit from behind.”

Michael froze.

“What?”

“When I woke up, Sarah was gone.”

Michael whispered:

“Who attacked you?”

Rebecca answered:

“Ashley.”

Michael's phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

You have twenty-four hours.

Another arrived.

Bring Rebecca.

Another.

Bring Emma.

Michael stared.

Then came the final message.

Or your sister dies.

He showed Detective Brooks.

She immediately began tracing the number.

Daniel entered.

“What happened?”

Michael told him.

Daniel's expression darkened.

“They're forcing a trade.”

“For what?”

Daniel looked at the hotel room door.

“To recover the evidence Sarah hid.”

Michael shook his head.

“We don't have it.”

Rebecca said quietly through the phone:

“Yes, you do.”

Everyone looked at Michael.

Rebecca continued:

“Sarah left you one final clue.”

“What clue?”

“The night she died, she told me there was something she couldn't carry.”

Michael looked at the photograph.

“Where is it?”

“Inside Emma's childhood toy.”

Michael looked at the bed.

Emma's rabbit.

He picked it up.

Rebecca told him where to cut.

Michael opened a small seam.

A memory card slipped out.

He stared at it.

The final evidence.

They connected it to the laptop.

A video appeared.

Sarah stood in the frame.

This time she was not crying.

She looked determined.

“Michael, if you're watching this, then they've already come for Emma.”

She took a breath.

“The person you need to fear is not Ashley.”

Michael leaned closer.

Sarah looked directly into the camera.

“It is the person who has been beside you every day.”

The video ended.

Michael stared at the black screen.

His sister's name appeared on his phone.

She was calling.

He answered.

May you like

Her first words were:

“Michael, don't trust Rebecca.”
