Chapter 7 - Sarah's bedroom had remained untouched for two years.Michael had never been able to change it.

Her books still sat beside the bed.

Her perfume remained on the dresser.

A sweater hung over a chair.

Emma rarely entered the room.

That night, for the first time, she led Michael inside.

She stopped beside the old wooden floor.

“Here.”

Michael knelt.

“How do you know?”

“Ashley asked me about it.”

“When?”

“Last week.”

“What did she ask?”

“She asked if Mommy ever hid things here.”

Michael looked at the floorboards.

“Did you tell her?”

Emma shook her head.

“She said you would be angry if I lied.”

Michael felt his stomach turn.

He examined the floor.

Nothing obvious.

Then he noticed a scratch beneath the bed.

He moved the bedframe.

There was a narrow trapdoor.

Michael opened it.

Inside was a black envelope.

And beneath it, another photograph.

Sarah stood beside Richard Vale.

Michael had seen them at business functions.

But this photograph was different.

They were arguing.

Richard held a folder.

Sarah was pointing toward him.

On the back:

He is not the only one.

Michael opened the black envelope.

Inside was a list of names.

School administrators.

Doctors.

Lawyers.

A private investigator.

A family court clerk.

At the bottom was another name.

Ashley Reed.

Beside it was a date.

The date Michael first met her.

He stared at the page.

“She was placed in my life.”

Daniel stood behind him.

“It looks that way.”

Michael turned.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel pointed at the list.

“Look at the first name.”

Michael read it.

Paul Grant.

“Who's that?”

“Family counselor.”

Michael searched the old email archive.

Paul Grant had recommended Ashley to Michael after Sarah's death.

He had described her as compassionate.

Patient.

Excellent with children.

Michael's jaw tightened.

“Who recommended him?”

Daniel looked at the list.

“The law firm.”

Michael turned to him.

“Your law firm?”

Daniel nodded.

Silence.

Michael suddenly understood.

This wasn't one person.

It was a network.

A system of people pushing small decisions toward one outcome.

Ashley entering the home.

Emma being labeled difficult.

Michael being made to doubt himself.

The trust becoming vulnerable.

Sarah discovering the pattern.

Then dying.

Michael looked at the list again.

“Where is Paul now?”

Daniel searched his phone.

“He moved to Arizona.”

“Why?”

“Retired.”

Michael's phone rang.

Detective Brooks.

“We found Ashley.”

Michael stood.

“Where?”

“She turned herself in.”

Michael's eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“She walked into a police station an hour ago.”

“Where is she?”

“Downtown.”

Michael grabbed his jacket.

“I'm coming.”

Detective Brooks paused.

“She asked for you.”

Michael stopped.

“What did she say?”

“She said she has proof you're the real danger.”

The room went silent.

Michael looked at Emma.

Then at the list.

Then at Sarah's letter.

“I'll be there.”

At the police station, Ashley sat in an interview room.

No handcuffs.

No visible fear.

She looked calm.

Almost relieved.

Michael entered.

Detective Brooks stayed behind the glass.

Ashley looked up.

“You found the cameras.”

Michael didn't respond.

“You found Sarah's records.”

Still nothing.

“You found Daniel.”

Michael sat.

“Where is Emma's father?”

Ashley smiled.

“You.”

“Why did you create those reports?”

“You're assuming I created them.”

“You threatened my daughter.”

“She was telling stories.”

“You grabbed her.”

“She was misbehaving.”

Michael leaned forward.

“You kidnapped her.”

Ashley shook her head.

“I protected her.”

“From what?”

“You.”

Michael stared.

Ashley pushed a file across the table.

Inside were photographs.

Michael drinking.

Michael shouting at a business meeting.

Michael sleeping at his desk.

Michael carrying Emma after a school event.

Nothing criminal.

Nothing meaningful.

Ashley tapped the photographs.

“This is what I would have shown the court.”

Michael frowned.

“You were building a custody case.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Sarah asked me to.”

Michael froze.

“What?”

Ashley leaned back.

“Your wife knew she was in danger.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

“She wanted me to watch you.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

Ashley smiled.

“Not yet.”

She slid another photograph across the table.

Sarah.

Standing beside Ashley.

Michael's heart stopped.

The photo had been taken months before he met Ashley.

He looked up.

“You've known Sarah longer than you said.”

Ashley nodded.

“She came to me first.”

“Why?”

“Because she was afraid.”

“Of Richard?”

Ashley shook her head.

“Of what Richard would do to Emma.”

Michael stared.

“Then why did you hurt her?”

Ashley leaned closer.

“Because someone else was giving me orders.”

Michael felt his pulse climb.

“Who?”

Ashley smiled.

Then she looked through the glass.

Directly toward Detective Brooks.

Michael followed her gaze.

Ashley whispered:

“You're asking the wrong person.”

Michael turned.

Detective Brooks stood motionless.

Ashley continued:

“The person who knows the truth isn't behind that glass.”

“Then who?”

Ashley looked back at him.

“Your sister.”

Michael froze.

“What did you just say?”

“She has been lying to you too.”

Michael stood abruptly.

“No.”

Ashley smiled.

“Ask her where she was the night Sarah died.”

The door opened.

Detective Brooks entered.

Michael turned toward her.

Ashley was still smiling.

Then the lights in the police station flickered.

Once.

May you like

Twice.

And every camera in the building went black.
