Chapter 5 - The house was empty. That was the first thing Michael noticed.

The second was the front door.

Unlocked.

He stepped inside.

“Emma?”

No answer.

The living room looked untouched.

The kitchen looked untouched.

Everything was too normal.

Michael hated it.

Daniel entered behind him.

“This is wrong.”

Michael nodded.

They moved through the house.

No Ashley.

No Emma.

No struggle.

Then Michael heard something.

A faint sound from upstairs.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

He looked at Daniel.

They climbed the stairs.

The sound came from the hallway.

From the closet.

Michael approached slowly.

He reached for the handle.

Locked.

His hands shook.

He pulled out the brass key.

Click.

The door opened.

Emma was inside.

Alone.

Michael dropped to his knees.

“Emma!”

She ran into him.

He held her tightly.

“Are you hurt?”

She shook her head.

“She put me in here.”

Michael looked around.

“How did you get out?”

Emma pointed upward.

“I climbed through there.”

Michael followed her finger.

A ceiling vent.

Impossible.

Too small for an adult.

But a child could crawl through it.

Michael looked at the closet walls.

Something bothered him.

The coats were hanging differently.

He pushed them aside.

There was another opening.

A narrow vertical passage inside the wall.

Emma whispered:

“Ashley said nobody knew about it.”

Daniel stared.

“That's not part of the original house plan.”

Michael looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I have the plans.”

He pulled out his phone and opened old blueprints.

The closet should have been a solid wall.

There was no passage.

Michael looked at Emma.

“Did Ashley take you through there?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Emma pointed toward the floor.

“She said Mommy used it.”

Michael crouched.

“What did Mommy use it for?”

Emma shrugged.

“She put papers there.”

Michael ran his fingers along the wood.

A section moved.

Inside was a small metal box.

He pulled it out.

The box was locked.

Daniel examined it.

“Your second key.”

Michael took out the brass key.

It fit.

Click.

The box opened.

Inside were three things.

A USB drive.

A folded letter.

And a ring.

Michael knew the ring.

It had belonged to Sarah.

He unfolded the letter.

His hands began to shake.

Michael,

If you're reading this, I failed to tell you what I found.

He looked at Daniel.

He did.

Ashley did not come into our lives by accident.

Michael's chest tightened.

She knew about the trust. She knew about Emma. And she knew about the conditions written into the agreement.

But she is not acting alone.

Michael stopped.

The next line was written harder, as if Sarah's hand had been shaking.

Do not trust Daniel.

Michael slowly looked up.

Daniel's face collapsed.

“I can explain.”

Michael held up the letter.

“Not yet.”

He continued.

If Daniel tells you he was trying to help me, ask him why he was the last person I met before the accident.

Michael stared at Daniel.

“Why did she tell me not to trust you?”

Daniel looked devastated.

“Because she thought I was working with them.”

“Were you?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because I made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

Daniel stared at the ring.

“I gave Ashley information.”

Michael's voice sharpened.

“What information?”

“About the trust.”

Daniel took a breath.

“I thought she was trying to help you.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“You thought the woman secretly building a case against my daughter was helping me?”

“I didn't know.”

“You knew enough.”

Daniel had no answer.

Michael plugged the USB drive into his laptop.

Folders appeared.

Videos.

Documents.

Emails.

One video file was dated two weeks before Sarah died.

Michael opened it.

Sarah appeared on screen.

She was sitting in the same kitchen.

She looked exhausted.

“Michael, I don't know if you'll ever see this.”

Michael stopped breathing.

Sarah continued.

“I found out Ashley isn't using Emma because she hates her.”

The screen flickered.

“She wants Emma to say something.”

Michael leaned closer.

Sarah looked directly into the camera.

“She wants Emma to identify the man who visited our house the night before I died.”

Michael froze.

The video ended.

Another file opened automatically.

A security recording.

The driveway.

Two weeks before the accident.

Ashley entered the house.

Behind her came a man.

Black coat.

Silver ring.

Michael looked at Emma.

“Is that him?”

Emma stepped closer.

The video played.

She pointed.

“That man.”

Michael stared at the screen.

The man turned.

His face became visible.

Michael knew him.

He had seen that face at family dinners.

At business meetings.

At Sarah's funeral.

He was smiling beside Michael when they buried his wife.

Richard Vale.

Michael shut the laptop.

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Richard.”

Daniel sat down.

“This is bigger than Ashley.”

Michael looked at him.

“How much bigger?”

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel's expression changed.

He slowly removed the phone from his ear.

“What?”

Michael waited.

Daniel looked at Emma.

“Police found a vehicle.”

“Whose?”

“Ashley's.”

“Where?”

“Three miles from here.”

Michael felt relief for half a second.

Then Daniel added:

“But Emma wasn't inside.”

Michael's stomach dropped.

“Then where is she?”

Daniel looked at the basement door.

“The report says something else was found in the trunk.”

“What?”

May you like

Daniel swallowed.

“Sarah's coat.”
