Chapter 15 - The HeirsThe recording continued.

David watched his dead father speak from a dusty video archive.

“I know someone will eventually uncover this.”

The man's face appeared tired.

“If that happens, understand one thing.”

Arthur stared at the screen.

“You were never the keeper of Blackthorn.”

David looked at him.

“You were.”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

The recording continued.

“You were the architect of the prison.”

Arthur suddenly lunged for the projector.

David tackled him.

They crashed onto the stone floor.

Arthur struck David across the face.

David fought back.

Years of anger surged through him.

“You took my son.”

Arthur screamed.

“I saved him!”

“You stole him!”

“You would have gotten him killed!”

“You stole my wife!”

Arthur froze.

David pushed him away.

“You stole my life.”

Police sirens echoed outside.

The mansion had become surrounded.

Arthur looked toward the staircase.

Then toward Benjamin.

Then Lily.

His face changed.

“You don't know what happens next.”

David stood.

“What?”

“The moment the trust becomes public, every hidden claimant comes after them.”

Evelyn stepped beside David.

“Then we'll protect them.”

Arthur laughed.

“You think you can?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Yes.”

Arthur's smile faded.

The doors exploded open.

Police entered.

The lawyer was arrested.

The corrupt security chief was arrested.

Records were carried out by the dozens.

The mansion remained silent.

For the first time in decades.

Silent.

David found Karen lying near the emergency passage.

She was alive.

Barely.

He knelt beside her.

“You saved them.”

Karen smiled weakly.

“I owed them that.”

“Why did you marry me?”

She looked at him.

“I was supposed to watch you.”

David waited.

“Then?”

“I fell in love with the family.”

Her eyes moved toward Lily.

“And with you.”

David lowered his gaze.

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

Outside, the first sunlight of morning touched the mansion.

Hours later, David stood in the nursery.

Two children sat on the floor.

Benjamin held a toy car.

Lily was drawing.

She drew four people.

David.

Evelyn.

Benjamin.

Herself.

Under the picture she wrote:

HOME.

David stared at it.

Evelyn came beside him.

“We have a lot to explain.”

David nodded.

“And a lot to repair.”

“Yes.”

“But they're together.”

Evelyn smiled.

“For the first time.”

David looked at the old family portrait hanging above the fireplace.

The portrait Karen had nearly destroyed.

He removed it from the wall.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside was one final envelope.

No name.

No seal.

Only three words.

THE THIRD HEIR.

David stared.

Evelyn took the letter.

“Don't.”

He opened it anyway.

Inside was a photograph.

A baby.

Another Carrow child.

Beside the baby stood Margaret.

And behind her was a date.

Twenty years earlier.

David's hands trembled.

“There was another child.”

Evelyn read the note.

Her face turned white.

“What?”

David looked at her.

“The third heir isn't dead.”

She stared at the photograph.

“Then where is he?”

David turned the picture over.

There was a handwritten address.

Not overseas.

Not hidden.

Not distant.

It was in the same town.

Less than ten minutes from Blackthorn Mansion.

David looked toward the front door.

Someone knocked.

Once.

Twice.

Pause.

Once.

The family signal.

Lily stopped drawing.

Benjamin looked up.

Evelyn whispered, “Who is that?”

David slowly walked toward the door.

He opened it.

A young man stood outside.

Twenty years old.

Dark hair.

Carrow eyes.

He held the same silver crest in his hand.

And the first thing he said was:

“I'm here for my family.”

David stared at him.

Behind the young man stood a woman David had never seen before.

She was holding the original heirloom box.

The box Karen had tried to destroy.

The lid slowly opened.

Inside was a final photograph.

David looked at it.

Then at the young man.

Then at Evelyn.

And he realized something terrifying.

The story of the heirs had never been about finding the children.

It had been about finding all of them.

And somewhere in Blackthorn Mansion, there were still secrets waiting to be opened.

David closed his hand around the photograph.

“Come inside.”

The young man smiled.

“I was hoping you'd say that.”

Behind them, somewhere deep beneath the mansion, another lock clicked open.

May you like

And a voice whispered through the walls.

“Welcome home.”
