Chapter 14 - The House ChoosesDavid woke on cold stone.

His hands were tied.

Across the chamber sat Benjamin.

Lily was beside him.

Karen and Evelyn were unconscious nearby.

A projector illuminated the wall.

Arthur stood before it.

“You wanted the truth.”

David struggled against the ropes.

“Let them go.”

Arthur shook his head.

“You still think this is about punishment.”

“What is it about?”

“Choice.”

Arthur pressed a button.

Images appeared.

Blackthorn Mansion.

The family trust.

The old photographs.

Then another image.

A map.

The mansion was connected to dozens of underground chambers.

David stared.

“The house was built as a vault.”

Arthur nodded.

“Every secret was stored here.”

“Why?”

“Because secrets have value.”

Arthur placed the original trust document on the table.

“Benjamin and Lily must sign.”

David laughed bitterly.

“They're children.”

“Exactly.”

“They can't understand it.”

“They don't need to.”

Arthur leaned closer.

“They only need to inherit.”

David looked at the children.

Lily was crying silently.

Benjamin was holding her hand.

Then Lily whispered.

“Daddy.”

David looked at her.

“Don't let him make us choose.”

Arthur frowned.

“What?”

Lily looked at Benjamin.

“We choose together.”

David felt something click in his mind.

The trust required two heirs acting together.

Arthur wanted signatures.

But he had forgotten something.

Children could refuse.

David looked at Evelyn.

She understood.

The original trust had been designed to prevent one person from controlling both heirs.

Arthur had separated them precisely because he feared them together.

David pulled against the ropes.

“Arthur.”

“Yes?”

“You can't force them to sign.”

Arthur smiled.

“I can.”

He placed a knife on the table.

“Or I can make the decision simpler.”

David's blood ran cold.

Karen woke.

“No.”

Arthur turned.

Karen whispered, “You promised.”

“I promised nothing.”

Karen looked at David.

“There is another way.”

Arthur raised his gun.

“Do not.”

Karen smiled.

Then she grabbed the knife.

She cut her own restraints.

Arthur fired.

Karen collapsed.

David screamed.

“Karen!”

She pointed weakly toward a panel in the wall.

“Three stars.”

David looked.

The family crest.

He understood.

The emergency release.

He slammed his shoulder into it.

The wall opened.

A hidden staircase appeared.

“Go!” Karen gasped.

Evelyn pulled the children toward the stairs.

David stayed.

Arthur aimed his gun.

“You can't escape.”

David stared at him.

“You've spent thirty years believing this house belongs to you.”

Arthur smiled.

“It does.”

David shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed toward the children.

“It belongs to them.”

Then the mansion shook.

Alarms screamed.

The underground vault doors opened simultaneously.

All over Blackthorn, hidden records began spilling from their compartments.

Paper filled the halls.

Hard drives activated.

Old cameras switched on.

The house had begun broadcasting everything.

David's phone vibrated.

News alerts appeared.

CARROW FAMILY SECRET RECORDS LEAKED.

Arthur stared at the screens.

“What did you do?”

David smiled.

“Nothing.”

He looked toward Lily.

“She did.”

Lily held a small remote.

“I found it in the wall.”

Arthur stepped backward.

For the first time, he looked truly afraid.

Then the main screen changed.

A live video appeared.

The speaker in the feed was someone David never expected to see.

His father's voice.

Recorded years ago.

“My greatest mistake was trusting Arthur.”

David froze.

Arthur's face collapsed.

The recording continued.

May you like

“Because Arthur wasn't protecting the heirs.”

“He was creating them.”
