Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN IN THE TUNNELThe trapdoor beneath Nathan’s truck was not supposed to exist.

Yet there it was.

A narrow steel panel under the cargo compartment.

Nathan pried it open.

Cold air rose from below.

Mara shone her flashlight downward.

A ladder disappeared into darkness.

Then came Karen's voice.

“Please don't leave me.”

Nathan stared into the shaft.

“How did you get down there?”

Karen coughed.

“They put me here.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Mara descended first.

Nathan followed.

At the bottom, they found Karen tied to a pipe.

Her coral blazer was torn.

Her face was bruised.

She was terrified.

Mara cut the restraints.

Karen immediately grabbed her arm.

“It's bigger than I thought.”

“What is?”

“Everything.”

Nathan crouched.

“Start talking.”

Karen looked at him.

“Your father knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That the corridor wasn't abandoned.”

Mara helped her stand.

Karen continued.

“It's still active.”

Nathan looked around.

The tunnel stretched in both directions.

Old electrical lines ran along the ceiling.

Some were new.

Some were decades old.

At the far end, a red indicator light blinked.

Karen pointed.

“That came on when the truck arrived.”

Nathan walked toward it.

Mara grabbed his shoulder.

“Don't touch anything.”

He stopped.

A metal door stood beyond the light.

Numbers were engraved above it.

HAIL ACCESS / AUTHORIZED FAMILY ONLY

Nathan stared.

“My family?”

Karen whispered,

“Yes.”

Mara looked at him.

“Your father built this section.”

“Why?”

Karen shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Nathan pulled the brass key from his pocket.

He inserted it into the lock.

The door opened.

Inside was a room filled with old communications equipment.

One monitor was still active.

A cursor blinked.

Then text appeared.

HELLO, NATHAN.

Nathan took a step back.

Mara whispered,

“It's recognizing you.”

The monitor changed.

A video began playing.

Nathan's father appeared.

Older.

Tired.

Sitting in the same room.

Nathan froze.

His father looked directly into the camera.

“My son, if you are seeing this, then the network has found you.”

Nathan could barely breathe.

His father's voice continued.

“You were told I died in an accident. That was a lie.”

Karen covered her mouth.

Mara watched without blinking.

“I discovered that several federal emergency contracts were being redirected through private shell companies. People were paid to create emergencies, manufacture seizures, and move protected assets without oversight.”

Nathan stared.

“Black Harbor.”

His father nodded on the screen.

“Yes.”

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“But Black Harbor was never the real danger.”

The recording paused.

Nathan leaned closer.

“The real danger is the person inside our government who controls it.”

Mara’s face tightened.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She answered.

No one spoke.

Then came a whisper.

“You should have listened to the message.”

Mara immediately recognized the voice.

Karen looked at her.

“Who is it?”

Mara slowly lowered the phone.

Nathan watched her.

“Who?”

She swallowed.

“The man who trained me.”

Nathan went still.

“That federal official?”

“Yes.”

The monitor suddenly displayed a name.

DIRECTOR GABRIEL SHAW

Nathan stared.

“That's your boss.”

Mara nodded.

“He was my boss.”

The lights in the tunnel shut off.

Then every door behind them locked simultaneously.

Karen screamed.

A voice came over the speakers.

Gabriel Shaw.

“Agent Hail.”

Mara raised her weapon.

Shaw continued calmly.

“You have thirty minutes to bring me the case.”

Mara shouted,

“What case?”

“You already have it.”

She looked at the black metal case.

Shaw's voice softened.

“And Nathan has something even more valuable.”

Nathan frowned.

“What?”

A photo appeared on the monitor.

It showed Nathan at fourteen.

Standing beside his father's burning vehicle.

But there was another person in the photograph.

A teenage girl.

Standing behind Nathan.

Mara leaned closer.

She recognized her.

It was her.

Nathan stared at the screen.

“You were there.”

Mara closed her eyes.

“I was.”

The tunnel echoed with a distant metallic sound.

Someone was approaching from behind the locked doors.

Shaw spoke one final time.

“And now you finally remember each other.”

The lights came back on.

At the end of the tunnel stood a little girl.

Barefoot.

Wearing a red coat.

Karen screamed.

Nathan whispered,

“That's impossible.”

May you like

Because the girl was holding a photograph of Nathan's father.

And smiling.
