Chapter 14 - THE LAST SEIZURERuiz walked into the chamber.

Alive.
Uninjured.
Mara stared.
“We shot you.”
Ruiz smiled.
“You shot a man wearing my face.”
The room went silent.
A synthetic disguise unit peeled away from his skin.
A different man stood beneath it.
Older.
Calm.
Gabriel Shaw.
Nathan raised his weapon.
“You used a fake Ruiz.”
Shaw nodded.
“People trust uniforms.”
Karen whispered,
“You were the fourth suspect.”
Shaw smiled.
“I was the first.”
Mara raised her weapon.
“You murdered my father.”
“No.”
“My mentor?”
“No.”
“My mother?”
“No.”
Shaw looked at Evelyn.
“She survived because she was useful.”
Then he looked at Nathan.
“Your father was the only man capable of dismantling Harbor Nine.”
Nathan tightened his grip.
“So you killed him.”
“He refused.”
Shaw stepped forward.
“He thought the network belonged to the public.”
“And you?”
“It belongs to whoever can control it.”
The countdown continued.
2:11.
Shaw pointed at Mara.
“She was supposed to activate the system years ago.”
Nathan looked at Mara.
“What happens if she does?”
Shaw smiled.
“Every encrypted federal emergency network goes live.”
Mara understood.
It would expose everything.
“Then why stop us?”
“Because the activation was never supposed to happen publicly.”
Nathan stared at him.
“You want to use me.”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
“To seize every asset Harbor Nine controls.”
Mara moved.
Shaw's men aimed.
Gunfire erupted.
Nathan tackled Mara behind the central console.
Lucas shot two attackers.
Evelyn pulled Karen into a service passage.
The countdown reached one minute.
Nathan saw the control panel.
His father's handwriting appeared on the screen.
TRUST NO SINGLE PERSON.
Nathan looked at Mara.
She understood.
“We don't activate it.”
“Then what?”
“We break the command.”
Nathan touched the screen.
The system asked:
SELECT SUCCESSOR.
He chose Mara.
She stared.
“No.”
Nathan said,
“My father trusted you.”
“He warned you not to trust me.”
Nathan smiled.
“He warned me not to trust the version of you they created.”
Mara placed her hand on the scanner.
The system paused.
DUAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
Nathan placed his hand beside hers.
The countdown hit ten seconds.
Shaw shouted,
“Stop!”
Nine.
Eight.
Seven.
He fired.
Lucas stepped in front of them.
The bullet hit him.
Six.
Nathan screamed.
Five.
Mara held her hand steady.
Four.
Shaw lunged.
Three.
Karen pulled the emergency lever.
The floor beneath Shaw opened.
He fell into the tunnel.
Two.
One.
The system activated.
But instead of releasing the network to anyone, every screen displayed one message.
PUBLIC DISCLOSURE PROTOCOL.
Nathan stared.
“What did my father build?”
Mara whispered,
“A dead-man switch.”
Thousands of files began transmitting.
Federal contracts.
Blackmail records.
Bank transfers.
Secret prisons.
Names.
Dates.
Evidence.
Harbor Nine was being exposed to the world.
Shaw climbed out of the pit.
Blood covered his face.
He stared at the screens.
“No.”
Nathan looked at him.
“Yes.”
Then every television in the country changed.
Helena Ward's live broadcast was interrupted.
Her face disappeared.
The words HARBOR NINE appeared.
Karen began crying.
Lucas lay motionless.
Nathan ran toward him.
“Mara!”
She rushed over.
Lucas opened his eyes.
Barely.
He smiled.
“Still alive.”
Nathan laughed through tears.
“You're impossible.”
Lucas whispered,
“Dad was right.”
“About what?”
“He said you'd finish it.”
Nathan looked at the screens.
Harbor Nine had just been exposed.
But one thing was wrong.
The system showed one final red alert.
ORIGIN NODE ACTIVE.
Mara stared.
“Where is that?”
The map zoomed in.
Not Willowmere Lane.
Not the lighthouse.
Not the courthouse.
Nathan recognized the location.
His childhood home.
The house where his father died.
Mara looked at him.
“Nathan.”
He stared at the screen.
“The fire wasn't an accident.”
A final message appeared.
