Chapter 9 - The RecordingThe truth about my father was hidden inside a voice nobody expected to hear.

The hospital looked ordinary from the outside.
Inside, it felt wrong.
Too quiet.
Too many cameras.
Too much security for an abandoned wing.
The reservation led us to Room 417.
The door was unlocked.
Inside was an old television.
A chair.
And a tape recorder.
The screen turned on by itself.
A man appeared.
Daniel.
Older than in the photographs.
Alive.
My breath caught.
"Dad."
My mother began crying.
Nathaniel stared at the screen.
Daniel spoke.
"If you're watching this, Nathaniel finally found Ruby."
Nathaniel took a step closer.
"Daniel."
The recording continued.
"I know what you're thinking."
Nathaniel's jaw tightened.
"You lied to me."
Daniel nodded from the screen.
"I did."
"Why?"
"Because Father was going to kill her."
The camera showed another room.
A little girl sat at a table.
Me.
I was maybe six.
I was drawing.
A man stood behind the camera.
My father.
Alive.
I touched the screen.
"I remember this."
My mother looked at me.
"What?"
"I was told it was a dream."
Daniel continued.
"Ruby knows me. She's seen me."
Nathaniel whispered:
"Then why did you stay away?"
Daniel looked exhausted.
"Because every time I came near her, someone died."
The recording changed.
Documents appeared onscreen.
Bank transfers.
Illegal property deals.
Names.
Politicians.
Judges.
Police officials.
It wasn't just a family scandal.
It was a network.
Daniel had uncovered a system that controlled entire neighborhoods.
Then one document appeared.
ORCHARD CHILD PROTECTION TRUST
Nathaniel leaned forward.
"What is that?"
Daniel answered from the recording.
"A trust I created to protect children whose parents were threatened by Graves Energy."
My mother stared.
"You created it?"
Daniel nodded.
"Using company money."
Nathaniel's face hardened.
"You stole from our company."
"I took back money Father had already stolen from those families."
Then Daniel revealed something worse.
"The trust has only one controlling beneficiary."
The screen displayed a name.
RUBY HART.
I stared.
"Why me?"
Daniel answered.
"Because Father wanted you dead."
My mother collapsed into a chair.
Nathaniel looked furious.
"Why?"
The next document appeared.
It was a bloodline chart.
At the bottom was my name.
Then Daniel's.
Then Nathaniel's father.
And beside the family name:
PRIMARY HEIRSHIP TRIGGER
Nathaniel stared.
"The trust controls the remaining Graves estate."
Daniel nodded.
"Ruby is the legal successor to assets Father hid from everyone."
Nathaniel's mouth fell open.
"So this entire thing..."
"Was never about eviction."
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
"It was about ownership."
The recording ended.
The lights went out.
A gunshot cracked through the corridor.
Marcus shouted.
"DOWN!"
Nathaniel pulled me to the floor.
Glass shattered.
Someone screamed.
Then the door slammed open.
A man in a black coat entered.
He looked directly at me.
"Ruby Hart."
Nathaniel stood between us.
"Don't."
The man smiled.
"I'm not here to hurt her."
He raised a folder.
"I'm here to tell her that her father is waiting."
My heart stopped.
"Where?"
The man's smile disappeared.
"In the next room."
Nathaniel grabbed the door handle.
The man whispered:
"Go ahead."
Nathaniel opened the connecting door.
And there, sitting in a wheelchair, was my father.
May you like
Daniel Graves.
Alive.
