Chapter 11 - The Second SignatureThe man behind the entire conspiracy wasn't the one we feared.

We returned to Graves Tower before midnight.
Nathaniel locked the building down completely.
Every elevator.
Every stairwell.
Every entrance.
Yet the strangest thing was this:
Nobody had attacked us.
They were waiting.
Marcus uncovered another file.
It contained old board signatures.
Nathaniel's father.
Leonard Vale.
And one more.
Margaret Vale.
Nathaniel looked at her.
"Why is your signature here?"
Margaret shook her head.
"I was sixteen."
"Your signature is on a property transfer."
"I didn't sign it."
"Then who did?"
She looked at the page.
Her lips parted.
"My father."
Nathaniel stared.
"Using your name."
Margaret nodded.
She sat down.
"He used my name because minors couldn't be prosecuted the same way."
"So you were involved."
"I was a child."
Nathaniel's expression softened.
"Then why did you stay?"
"Because he threatened my mother."
The room went silent.
Margaret finally revealed the last piece.
Leonard wasn't working for Nathaniel's father.
Nathaniel's father was working for Leonard.
"The board believed your father controlled the company."
Margaret looked at Nathaniel.
"He didn't."
"Who did?"
"Leonard."
Marcus spread old banking records across the table.
The shell companies.
The hidden trusts.
The property transfers.
Everything pointed to one account.
An offshore foundation called Orchard Holdings.
Nathaniel searched the database.
"Who owns it?"
Margaret stared at the screen.
"No one."
"That's impossible."
"It's designed that way."
Then she looked at me.
"The legal owner is the beneficiary."
"Who?"
"Ruby."
My heart hammered.
Nathaniel stared at the screen.
"So Ruby legally owns everything."
"Not everything."
Margaret pointed at another line.
"Only the assets stolen from families listed in the Orchard files."
Nathaniel breathed slowly.
"Then if Ruby accesses the archive..."
"They can prove the theft."
"Which destroys the board."
"Yes."
"And exposes Leonard."
"Yes."
A sound came from the elevator.
Ding.
Everyone froze.
Nathaniel checked his security monitor.
No one appeared.
The elevator doors opened.
Empty.
Then a folder slid out onto the floor.
Marcus picked it up.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Leonard Vale.
Standing beside Nathaniel's father.
Standing beside Daniel.
And standing beside someone else.
A woman.
Margaret whispered:
"No."
Nathaniel stared.
"Who is she?"
Margaret began shaking.
"My mother."
The photograph was dated thirteen years ago.
One year before Daniel disappeared.
On the back was a sentence:
THE SECOND SIGNATURE NEVER BELONGED TO LEONARD.
Nathaniel looked at Margaret.
"What does that mean?"
She didn't answer.
Then her eyes moved toward the roof access panel.
"Someone else signed the original trust."
"Who?"
Margaret whispered:
"Your mother."
Nathaniel went completely still.
His mother had been dead for years.
Yet according to the photograph, she had signed the secret trust herself.
Then the rooftop doors opened.
A woman's voice echoed through the stairwell.
"Nathaniel."
He stared upward.
The voice continued:
"Your mother wasn't the victim."
May you like
Nathaniel's face went pale.
"She was the founder."
