Chapter 13 - The BoardroomThe final battle wasn't fought with guns. It was fought with names, signatures, and one frightened child refusing to lie.

We had fourteen minutes.
Nathaniel grabbed the emergency phone.
"Evacuate the tower."
Marcus shook his head.
"Too late."
"What?"
"The elevators are locked."
The fire alarms began screaming.
Smoke filled the lower floors.
People ran.
Nathaniel looked at me.
"Ruby, stay with me."
We ran toward the boardroom.
It was the only room with an independent power source.
Inside were twelve members of the Graves board.
All trapped.
Leonard's face appeared on every screen.
"Welcome."
Nathaniel stepped forward.
"You'll never get the trust."
Leonard smiled.
"The trust has already been transferred."
Everyone gasped.
Nathaniel looked at the board.
One member stood.
"What does that mean?"
Leonard answered.
"It means the company belongs to the girl."
He looked directly at me.
"Ruby Hart."
I moved backward.
Nathaniel stood in front of me.
Leonard continued.
"All Mr. Graves needs to do is authorize the transfer."
Nathaniel's jaw tightened.
"You want me to sign?"
"Yes."
"What happens then?"
"You become irrelevant."
"And Ruby?"
Leonard smiled.
"She disappears."
Nobody moved.
Then the boardroom doors opened.
My father walked in.
Daniel.
Alive.
Leonard's smile vanished.
"You."
Daniel said nothing.
He simply placed a folder on the table.
"Your real problem isn't Ruby."
Leonard stared.
"It's the archive."
Daniel opened the folder.
"Every transaction. Every forged death. Every child."
He looked at the board.
"Copies are already distributed."
Leonard's face changed.
Nathaniel smiled for the first time.
"You lost."
Leonard pressed the remote.
Nothing happened.
Marcus had cut the signal.
The screen went black.
Security rushed into the room.
Leonard was arrested downstairs.
But Daniel didn't move.
He looked at me.
"Ruby."
I ran to him.
He hugged me.
For the first time in my life, I heard my father say:
"I'm sorry."
I cried into his jacket.
Then Nathaniel interrupted.
"There's one thing left."
Daniel looked at him.
"The original archive."
Daniel nodded.
"The vault is underneath this room."
Nathaniel stared at the floor.
"How do we open it?"
Daniel pointed at me.
"She knows."
"I've never been here."
"You don't need to remember."
He gave me the silver pendant.
"Your blood will."
A hidden panel opened.
Inside was a scanner.
I pressed my palm against it.
The machine beeped.
Then the floor opened.
A staircase appeared.
We descended into darkness.
At the bottom stood a steel door.
A message appeared:
ONLY THE PROTECTED CHILD MAY ENTER.
I looked at Nathaniel.
"Can I do it?"
He smiled.
"Yes."
The door opened.
Inside was an enormous archive.
Boxes.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Documents.
And in the center stood a black safe.
A note rested on top.
I picked it up.
Daniel came close.
I read it aloud.
Ruby,
if you've reached this room, then I failed to keep the world from knowing your name.
But maybe that's no longer necessary.
There is one final truth.
Your father is alive.
Nathaniel will protect you.
And your mother will tell you why she chose to lie.
I looked at my mother.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Mom?"
She stepped forward.
"There is something I haven't told you."
She reached into her coat.
Pulled out an old photograph.
It showed me as a baby.
Daniel was holding me.
Nathaniel's mother stood beside him.
And on the back was a sentence:
Ruby was never the child we were protecting.
I looked up.
"Then who was?"
May you like
My mother's voice trembled.
"Your twin."
