Chapter 20 - The Woman Who Knew EverythingVincent looked exactly as he had the night Adrian shot him.

Except there was no bullet wound.

No blood.

No fear.

Just a smile.

Adrian entered behind me.

His weapon pointed directly at Vincent.

“You died.”

Vincent laughed.

“Apparently, I’m having a difficult week.”

I looked at Elena.

“Who are you?”

She removed her coat.

Then the wig.

Then the false identity.

Underneath was a woman with dark hair and the same green eyes as my mother.

My breath stopped.

Adrian’s face went white.

Elena whispered:

“Your mother.”

The world went silent.

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“I couldn’t come back.”

“You were dead.”

“I had to be.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You let me believe you died.”

“I let everyone believe it.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor would have killed all three of you.”

She looked at me.

“Cara. Daniel. Isabella.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Daniel?”

A voice came from the doorway.

“You really thought I was Victor’s son?”

Daniel stepped inside.

Alive.

Smiling.

I stared.

“What?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I was your mother’s security chief.”

Everything collapsed into place.

Vincent.

Elena.

Daniel.

Toby.

Isabella.

Adrian.

All of them had been moving pieces across the same board.

And I had been the piece everyone thought they could control.

My mother walked toward the central console.

“Black Ledger was never meant to destroy the Duca family.”

“Then what was it for?”

“To destroy the people who created it.”

She pressed a key.

Across the city, thousands of files unlocked.

Judges were arrested.

Politicians resigned.

Bank accounts froze.

The empire collapsed in minutes.

Victor’s name appeared first.

Then every man who had protected him.

Vincent looked at Elena.

“You should have stayed dead.”

Elena smiled.

“You should have stayed in prison.”

He raised his gun.

Adrian fired first.

Vincent fell.

This time, he did not get up.

Victor was arrested before sunrise.

Toby survived.

Daniel survived.

Isabella disappeared for three days, then returned to help dismantle Black Ledger piece by piece.

And Adrian?

He stood on the balcony of the penthouse where this nightmare had begun.

His lip had healed.

The shattered cognac glass was gone.

The marble floor was polished.

But the memory remained.

I stood beside him.

“You could have killed me that night.”

He smiled.

“You punched me.”

“I saved your life.”

“You nearly broke my jaw.”

“I was trying to prevent you from dying.”

“I know.”

The city glittered beneath us.

For the first time, Adrian looked less like a king and more like a man.

“So what happens now?” I asked.

He looked at me.

“Now?”

He reached into his pocket.

There was the silver locket.

The one my mother had used to hide the truth.

He placed it in my hand.

“You decide.”

“Decide what?”

“Whether you disappear.”

“And if I don’t?”

His eyes stayed on mine.

“Then we rebuild.”

“What?”

“Everything.”

I looked toward Manhattan.

The city was waking.

Sirens.

Helicopters.

News helicopters circling Duca Tower.

The empire was over.

But something else had begun.

A week later, the hospital called.

Toby’s treatment had been approved.

Fully funded.

No conditions.

For the first time in years, I walked into his room without wondering whether I was about to lose him.

He smiled.

“You finally stopped running.”

I laughed.

“Apparently.”

He looked toward the window.

“Does Adrian still scare you?”

I thought about the punch.

The poisoned glass.

The blood.

The gunfire.

The secrets.

Then I smiled.

“Less than he used to.”

Toby grinned.

“That sounds dangerous.”

“It is.”

That night, Adrian came to the hospital.

He stood outside Toby’s room, holding two coffees.

He handed one to me.

“Americano?”

I looked surprised.

“You remembered.”

“I remember everything about you.”

My heart skipped.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”

He slowly lowered the phone.

“There’s a problem.”

“What kind?”

His eyes moved toward me.

“A Black Ledger account just transferred twelve billion dollars.”

“To where?”

“A private account in Zurich.”

“Whose?”

He showed me the screen.

The account holder name was mine.

CARA JENKINS.

I stared.

“No.”

Adrian looked at me.

The nightmare wasn’t over.

It had only changed owners.

And somewhere across the Atlantic, someone had just activated a final account my mother never told us existed.

On the screen beneath my name appeared one sentence.

May you like

WELCOME, HEIR.

Then the phone went black.
