Chapter 14 - The NurseThe woman smiled.

“You remember me.”

I did.

The nurse from Toby’s ward.

The one who had first warned us about the oxygen line.

“How?”

“I work where people underestimate me.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Where is Isabella?”

The woman laughed.

“Dead.”

Daniel cursed.

“How?”

“Vincent.”

Adrian stared.

“But Vincent was working for someone.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

She looked at me.

“Your father.”

“My father is dead.”

“No.”

She smiled.

“He’s alive.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

The nurse continued.

“Victor Duca never died. He disappeared.”

Daniel looked like someone had hit him.

“We saw the body.”

“A burned body.”

She shrugged.

“Not his.”

Adrian lowered his weapon.

“Where is he?”

“On his way here.”

A sound came from outside.

Engines.

Several.

The woman smiled.

“He knows the ledger has resurfaced.”

Adrian grabbed my arm.

“We leave.”

The house exploded into gunfire.

Windows shattered.

Doors splintered.

Men rushed through the front entrance.

Daniel returned fire.

Adrian pulled me through a hidden corridor.

The nurse followed.

“Why are you helping us?”

“I’m not.”

She pulled a gun.

Adrian turned.

She fired.

The bullet hit Daniel.

He collapsed.

“Daniel!”

Adrian caught him.

The woman ran.

I chased her into the basement.

She vanished.

A hidden door slammed shut.

Behind it was a room filled with computer servers.

Every screen displayed one image.

My mother.

And beside her, a man I had never seen.

Victor Duca.

Alive.

Standing behind them was a little girl.

Me.

And a second child.

My twin.

Then a final screen lit up.

A message appeared.

HELLO, CARA.

May you like

Another line followed.

I’M YOUR FATHER.
