Chapter 2 - The Name Behind the ManThe darkness lasted maybe five seconds.

It felt like five hours.
Oliver grabbed my hand.
“Mom?”
“I've got you.”
Outside, footsteps moved across the hallway.
Slow.
Measured.
Then they stopped.
The emergency light from the parking lot barely filtered through our curtains.
I could see Adrian's silhouette.
He wasn't moving.
I reached for my phone.
No signal.
That was the first thing that truly terrified me.
Not the knock.
Not the threat.
The fact that my phone showed no service.
Adrian noticed.
“They're blocking it.”
I stared at him.
“Who?”
He didn't answer.
“Adrian, I need an explanation.”
“I'll give you one.”
“When?”
“When you're safe.”
“You're in my home.”
“I know.”
“You brought this here.”
“I know.”
I hated how calmly he said it.
A metallic scrape came from the other side of the door.
Someone was doing something to the lock.
I pulled Oliver behind me.
Adrian limped toward the kitchen.
“Where are you going?”
“To stop them.”
He opened a drawer.
I expected a knife.
Instead, he pulled out a small metal object.
It looked like a key.
Except it wasn't.
He pressed it into the seam beneath the kitchen counter.
A hidden compartment popped open.
I stared.
“What is that?”
He removed a thin black pouch.
Inside was a folded photograph.
A wallet.
And a flash drive.
He shoved them into his pocket.
Then he looked at me.
“There's a fire escape behind the bathroom window.”
“That's six floors down.”
“Four.”
I stared.
“Our building has six floors.”
“The building next to us is six.”
He smiled faintly.
“Your building is four.”
I didn't know whether to be impressed or horrified.
The lock on our front door clicked.
Adrian moved fast.
He crossed the room and grabbed the handle.
“What are you doing?” I whispered.
“Buying us time.”
He pushed a heavy chair beneath the knob.
The door shook.
“Adrian!”
“Move.”
He guided Oliver toward the hallway.
I followed.
Then came a single sentence from outside.
“Adrian Cole, step away from the door.”
I stopped.
“Cole?”
Adrian looked at me.
“My name isn't Adrian.”
My throat went dry.
“What?”
He looked away.
“My name is Daniel Mercer.”
The door shook again.
“Daniel Mercer,” I whispered.
His face hardened.
“Don't say it loudly.”
“Who are you?”
He stared at me.
“A man who was supposed to be dead.”
The chair slammed backward.
The door cracked open two inches.
Adrian shoved us toward the bathroom.
“Go!”
We stumbled inside.
He climbed through the window first.
Cold air blasted my face.
Below us, the alley seemed impossibly far away.
“Oliver goes first.”
My son was shaking.
“Mom…”
“You're okay.”
Adrian reached out.
“Trust me.”
Oliver looked at me.
I nodded.
Adrian helped him onto the fire escape.
Then me.
He followed.
The apartment door exploded inward behind us.
Two men entered.
Dark jackets.
Gloves.
No uniforms.
One of them walked directly toward the kitchen.
He didn't search randomly.
He knew exactly where to look.
He crouched.
Ran his fingers beneath the counter.
Then stood.
“It's gone.”
My blood turned cold.
Adrian was right.
They weren't here by accident.
They were searching for something.
We reached the alley below.
Oliver was crying silently.
Adrian crouched beside him.
“They won't hurt you.”
I almost laughed.
“You don't know that.”
“I do.”
“Why?”
“Because they need you.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
Adrian looked at me.
“They need you because you're the only person in this city who can open what I stole.”
“What did you steal?”
Before he could answer, headlights appeared at the end of the alley.
A black SUV.
It stopped.
The rear door opened.
A woman stepped out.
She was wearing a dark coat.
Mid-fifties.
Perfect posture.
Gray hair.
She stared directly at Adrian.
Then at me.
Then at Oliver.
Her face remained calm.
But her voice was ice.
“Daniel.”
Adrian went still.
She raised a phone.
On the screen was a photograph.
A younger Adrian.
Standing beside a man I recognized immediately.
My late husband.
My breath disappeared.
May you like
The woman smiled.
“You really should have told her.”
