Chapter 15 - The Last Thing He HidThree months later, the world knew about Black Meridian.

Governments denied involvement.
Executives resigned.
Companies collapsed.
Investigations spread across continents.
Dr. Vale disappeared before trial.
The Architect was imprisoned.
Daniel survived.
Mara testified.
And Thomas…
Thomas became the most wanted man in the country.
Yet I never hated him the way I thought I would.
Because now I understood something.
People can love you and destroy you at the same time.
Thomas had done both.
He had saved me.
He had used me.
He had protected Oliver.
He had endangered him.
He had built a monster.
Then spent years trying to kill it.
On a rainy Thursday, I received a letter.
No return address.
Inside was a single key.
And a sentence.
The story isn't over.
I stared at it for a long time.
Then Oliver walked into the kitchen.
“Mom?”
“What?”
“Are you okay?”
I smiled.
“I'm fine.”
He looked at the key.
“What is that?”
“I don't know.”
He picked it up.
There was a tiny symbol engraved into the metal.
The same symbol from the flash drive.
Three lines inside a circle.
Oliver frowned.
“I've seen that before.”
“Where?”
He pointed toward the basement.
I followed him.
We searched through boxes.
Old photographs.
Thomas's notebooks.
Receipts.
Medical records.
Finally, Oliver found a small wooden box hidden beneath the floorboards.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Thomas.
Me.
Oliver.
But the date on the photograph was impossible.
It was dated six months after Thomas's supposed death.
He was standing behind us.
Alive.
Smiling.
I turned the photograph over.
A message was written in his handwriting.
Elena, if you found this, then Black Meridian was only the first layer.
My stomach tightened.
There was another line.
Never trust the government report.
Then another.
Never trust Daniel.
I looked at Oliver.
He whispered:
“Mom…”
At the bottom was one final sentence.
And whatever you do, don't let them find your second child.
I froze.
My heart stopped.
“Second child?”
Oliver stared at me.
I stared at the photograph.
There had never been another child.
At least…
not one I remembered.
Then someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Exactly like that first night.
I looked at Oliver.
He whispered:
“Mom, don't open it.”
I walked toward the door anyway.
“Why?”
He stared at me.
Because there was terror in his eyes.
And then he said something that made every hair on my body stand.
“I remember who lived here before us.”
I stopped.
“What?”
Oliver pointed toward the door.
“That man.”
The knocking came again.
Three times.
A man's voice came through.
“Elena.”
My blood turned cold.
It was Thomas.
Again.
Alive.
But this time there was something different in his voice.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Don't let Oliver answer the door.”
I looked at my son.
He was trembling.
The man's voice came again.
“Whatever happens next…”
A pause.
Then:
“Do not trust the boy.”
I stared at Oliver.
He stared back.
And slowly…
very slowly…
he smiled.
Not the innocent smile of my little boy.
A different smile.
One I'd never seen before.
Then he whispered:
“Mom…”
The lights went out.
May you like
And when they came back on,
Oliver was gone.
