Chapter 13 - Inside Black MeridianThe helicopter landed on the roof of a skyscraper before dawn.

The city below looked peaceful.
It wasn't.
Thomas led us through a hidden elevator.
No buttons.
No lights.
Only a biometric scanner.
He pressed his palm against it.
The doors opened.
I looked at him.
“How many times have you used this?”
“Too many.”
The elevator descended.
And descended.
And descended.
We went below the city.
Far below.
The doors opened onto a corridor made entirely of glass.
Behind the walls were servers.
Thousands of them.
Blue lights flickered.
Machines hummed.
Thomas stared at the system.
“This is where Echo began.”
I held Oliver's hand.
“Why bring us here?”
“Because the only way to destroy it is from inside.”
Daniel stopped.
“We don't have time.”
Thomas looked at him.
“You've said that for thirteen years.”
“And you ignored me for thirteen years.”
They stared at each other.
Old hatred.
Old guilt.
Old friendship.
Then alarms began to scream.
Thomas pointed.
“Go.”
We entered a circular room.
In the center was a chair.
A machine surrounded it.
I recognized it from my memories.
The white room.
The procedure.
The machine.
My stomach turned.
“No.”
Thomas stepped toward me.
“This is where they put the key inside you.”
I backed away.
“You want me to do it again?”
“No.”
He looked at Oliver.
“I want him to finish what I started.”
Oliver stared at the machine.
“What do I do?”
Thomas knelt.
“You remember.”
Oliver closed his eyes.
Numbers began appearing on the screens.
One after another.
A pattern.
A code.
I watched in disbelief.
My seven-year-old son walked to the machine.
His fingers moved across the console.
The system accepted every input.
ACCESS GRANTED
Daniel whispered:
“He's doing it.”
I asked:
“Doing what?”
Thomas looked at me.
“Opening the archive.”
The screens filled with names.
Governments.
Corporations.
Banks.
Military contracts.
Secret operations.
People who had built entire careers on hidden crimes.
Then one name appeared in red.
PROJECT FOUNDER: THOMAS BENNETT
Another.
PRIMARY CONTROLLER: DR. ADRIAN VALE
Another.
EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY: ELENA BENNETT
I stared.
“My name?”
Thomas looked at me.
“You were never just the memory carrier.”
“What am I?”
He hesitated.
“The person who authorized Echo.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“You did.”
“I wouldn't.”
“You weren't yourself.”
“What does that mean?”
Thomas whispered:
“They altered your personality.”
I felt sick.
“What?”
“They made you trust them.”
He pointed to the screen.
“You were programmed to protect the archive.”
I stepped back.
“Then why did I destroy it?”
“Because I broke the conditioning.”
I looked at him.
“And then?”
“I hid the final memory in you.”
Suddenly every sound stopped.
The system shut down.
Oliver opened his eyes.
“It's done.”
Thomas smiled.
Then a gunshot rang out.
Thomas staggered.
Blood spread across his chest.
I screamed.
Daniel raised his weapon.
Dr. Vale stood at the entrance.
He smiled.
“You always were sentimental, Thomas.”
Thomas fell.
Vale looked at Oliver.
“Now, my boy.”
He raised his gun.
“Come with me.”
Oliver didn't move.
Instead, he looked at me.
And smiled.
I noticed something in his hand.
A tiny black device.
The final key.
He whispered:
“Mom, Dad said this part was for you.”
May you like
He pressed the button.
The entire building exploded into darkness.
