Chapter 2 - The Files She CollectedClaire Had Been Building a Case While I Was Building Lies

I barely slept.

Every noise outside the house made me jump.

Every passing headlight moved across the walls like an accusation.

At four seventeen in the morning, I was still sitting at the kitchen island surrounded by the remains of my marriage.

Claire had documented everything.

Not just my affair.

Everything.

There were folders.

Actual folders.

She had organized my lies by month.

January.

February.

March.

April.

Each one contained photographs, receipts, screenshots, bank statements, and notes.

She had turned my betrayal into an accounting system.

I picked up the January folder.

Three pages in, I found something I hadn't expected.

A transfer.

Twenty-five thousand dollars.

From my company account to a consulting firm called Northbridge Strategic.

I remembered the transfer.

My business partner, Victor Hale, had told me it was for an emergency acquisition.

I had approved it in less than thirty seconds.

Next to the transaction, Claire had written:

Ask Daniel why Northbridge has the same mailing address as Samantha's apartment building.

I stared at the page.

That couldn't be right.

I pulled out my phone.

I searched the company.

Northbridge Strategic LLC.

The address matched.

Same building.

Same street.

Different suite.

My pulse started pounding.

I kept reading.

Twenty-five thousand.

Forty thousand.

Seventy-five thousand.

Each payment went through Northbridge and into another company.

Then another.

Then another.

Claire had traced them through eight different entities.

At the bottom of the folder was a bank document.

I recognized the account number.

It was one of our corporate accounts.

My signature was on the authorization.

I whispered, "No."

I remembered signing it.

Victor had placed the documents in front of me during a meeting.

"Routine restructuring," he'd said.

I'd signed.

Because I trusted him.

Because I was too busy sneaking around with Samantha to read anything.

Claire's note sat underneath the document.

Daniel never checks the numbers when Victor tells him to sign.

My phone rang.

Victor.

I stared at his name.

I didn't answer.

It rang again.

Then a text appeared.

We need to talk immediately.

Another.

Do not contact Claire.

My blood went cold.

I typed:

Where is she?

Three dots appeared.

Then vanished.

A minute later, Victor called again.

I answered.

"Where is my wife?"

"Daniel, calm down."

"Where is Claire?"

"I don't know."

"Then why are you telling me not to contact her?"

Silence.

"Victor?"

His voice changed.

"You found the envelope."

I stopped breathing.

"How do you know about the envelope?"

Another pause.

"Because Claire told me she was leaving."

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"When?"

"Last week."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because she asked me not to."

I laughed once.

It wasn't a happy laugh.

"My wife disappears with my daughter, empties my house, leaves evidence of my affair, and you think the problem is that she didn't tell you?"

"Daniel, you don't understand."

"Then explain it."

"I can't do this over the phone."

"Where are you?"

"I'll come to the house."

"No."

"Daniel..."

"No. You tell me right now."

Silence.

Then Victor said something that made my heart stop.

"Claire found the ledger."

"What ledger?"

He hung up.

I sat there staring at the screen.

Ledger.

I searched the documents.

Nothing.

No folder named ledger.

No financial statement using that word.

Then I remembered something.

The basement.

I went downstairs.

The shelves were packed with boxes.

Christmas decorations.

Old photographs.

Tax files.

Baby furniture.

I looked around.

Claire had taken almost everything connected to herself and Hope.

But one box remained.

A gray storage box labeled:

DANIEL - OLD BUSINESS

I opened it.

Inside were papers I hadn't seen in years.

Contracts.

Old invoices.

A first-year accounting report.

And at the bottom, an envelope sealed with red tape.

I opened it.

There was a handwritten ledger.

No company logo.

No names.

Just dates, amounts, and initials.

But the initials were familiar.

V.H.

S.R.

And dozens of others.

I turned the first page.

The numbers were enormous.

Millions.

I looked at the final page.

A single sentence was written there.

If Daniel finds this, it means Claire failed to keep him out of it.

My phone buzzed.

Samantha.

I answered.

"What do you want?"

There was a long silence.

Then she whispered,

"Daniel, you need to get out of your house."

"Why?"

"Because they're coming."

"Who?"

She began crying.

"I didn't know what they were doing."

"What did you do?"

"I was supposed to keep you distracted."

My entire body went numb.

"Who hired you?"

Samantha didn't answer.

"Who hired you?"

She whispered a name.

"Victor."

Then the line went dead.

At that exact moment, headlights appeared through the kitchen windows.

Two black SUVs stopped outside my house.

The doors opened.

Men stepped out.

I grabbed the ledger.

And finally understood the note Claire had left me.

May you like

She hadn't abandoned me.

She had run before the people behind my own life decided to erase all of us.
